Knowing how to read ISO 7010 signs is a five-minute skill that most inductions skip: the shape and colour tell you the category before the pictogram tells you the detail. What is in it
The snapshot covers ISO 7010:2019 with Amendments 1–11, documented on 21 July 2026. Withdrawn signs and draft ISO/DIS additions are left out on purpose — an index that mixes current codes with proposals is worse than no index at all when someone is ordering signage.
Signs are grouped into the five families the standard uses:
- Safe condition and evacuation — escape routes, first aid, assembly points.
- Fire equipment — extinguishers, hose reels, alarm call points.
- Prohibition — what must not be done here.
- Warning — what is dangerous here.
- Mandatory action — what you must wear or do here.
Each family has its own shape and colour convention, and that is what makes a sign work: a red circle with a diagonal bar reads as a prohibition across a language barrier, before anybody parses the pictogram in detail.
Why the pictograms are not on the page
The index is deliberately text-only. Each entry links to ISO's own record for that code (ISO Online Browsing Platform), which is where the authoritative image lives. We describe meaning and typical context in our own words and let ISO show the graphic — that keeps the reference honest about what it is and does not reproduce ISO's graphics.
The sources are on the page for the same reason: the standard's publication page (ISO 7010), the EU directive on minimum requirements for safety signs at work (Directive 92/58/EEC), and the pinned Wikipedia revision the code list and short names were compiled against (ISO 7010, revision 1355195652, CC BY-SA 4.0).
International standard, national rules on top
ISO 7010 creates a shared system of shapes, colours and symbols designed to reduce reliance on written language. That is genuinely useful in a multilingual workplace, and it is the reason a new hire from another country can read a fire exit sign on their first shift.
It does not replace local law. National rules can add signs, require supplementary wording, prescribe dimensions or set placement requirements, and in the EU the minimum workplace requirements come from the directive above as implemented in each country. Use the index to identify the right sign, then verify the installation against the rules that apply where the sign will hang.
How people actually use it
Three patterns show up most often. Someone has a code from a drawing or an audit report and needs to know what it means. Someone knows the hazard and needs the code to put on an order. And someone is writing an induction or a toolbox talk and wants the signs on site described consistently, in words that match what people will see on the wall.
That last one is where signage quietly fails. A sign only works if people recognise it under pressure, and recognition is a training outcome, not a purchasing one. Walking a new starter past the actual signs on their route is worth more than a slide of pictograms, and the same logic applies to evacuation: recognising the escape-route sign matters most on the day nobody is reading carefully.
