Valve Index — specification and verdict
The Valve Index is a PC-tethered headset, not a standalone one: it plugs into a gaming PC over DisplayPort and tracks through external SteamVR base stations mounted in the room. Valve lists dual LCDs at 1,440 x 1,600 per eye and a standout refresh range of 80, 90, 120 and up to 144 Hz — the smoothest in this comparison. Its Index Controllers track each finger individually, which is genuinely novel. There is no colour passthrough, no eye tracking and no onboard processor: everything is rendered by the PC.
For a training fleet this is the hard case. Each headset needs its own gaming PC and two wall-mounted base stations, there is no device-management or kiosk layer, and — the deciding point for us — our courses do not run on it at all, because they are built for Android-based standalone headsets, not SteamVR on a PC. It is bought through Steam, available in Poland, and aimed at PC gaming and research rather than shared corporate training. One practical wrinkle in 2026: Valve sells the Index headset on its own, in stock, but the full VR Kit, the headset-plus-controllers bundle, the Index Controllers and the base stations are all listed as sold out — so an Index bought today means sourcing tracking and controllers second-hand or from another Lighthouse vendor.
Do not buy the Index for Skillsive training: our apps will not run on it, and the PC-plus-base-station setup is the opposite of what a shared training room needs. It remains a superb enthusiast and research headset — the finger-tracking controllers and 144 Hz are still references — but for putting a workforce through a safety module, a standalone Quest or PICO is the right tool.

Average pixel density is our own arithmetic: panel pixels divided by the field of view on the same axis. It is the standard approximation, and it runs lower than a published peak figure because a lens packs pixels denser at the centre.
Who this device is for
Index is a device for a fixed PC VR station — a simulator, a research lab, an engineering review room — where a computer is part of the setup anyway and 144 Hz with finger-tracking controllers is worth the cabling. It is not a device for corporate safety training: our applications do not run on it, there is no standalone mode, and every session needs a PC, base stations and a mapped play space.
How it differs from its predecessor
Index has no successor from Valve in this catalogue in the ordinary sense — Steam Frame, announced for 2026, is a standalone Android device rather than a tethered one, which makes it a different product rather than a second-generation Index. Against the standalone headsets here, the honest comparison is that Index still wins on refresh rate and controllers and loses on everything about deployment.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
There is no hand tracking, no eye tracking, no kiosk mode and no standalone operation — the headset is a display and a set of sensors, and the computer does the rest. Per-eye resolution in our table comes from a third-party database rather than from Valve. The commercial picture is mixed rather than closed: Valve still sells the headset on its own store (checked 2026-08-16), while the full kit and most bundles show as out of stock, so a complete set today often means combining new and second-hand parts — and base stations and controllers are the parts that fail first.

Valve Index — frequently asked questions
- Is the Valve Index still worth buying for a company in 2026?
- Only for a specific PC VR use case, and only second-hand — Valve stopped selling it. If the requirement is corporate training that has to reach dozens of people, a standalone headset is the answer; Index makes sense where a simulator already runs on a PC and the 144 Hz display and finger-tracking controllers are the reason for choosing it.
- Why does the Index need base stations when newer headsets do not?
- It uses outside-in tracking: the base stations sweep the room with infrared and the headset works out where it is. That is what makes the tracking so precise in a fixed installation, and it is also why the setup does not travel — every new room needs the stations mounted and the space re-calibrated.
- Do Skillsive courses run on the Valve Index?
- No. Our applications are built for standalone Android XR devices; the Index has no on-board operating system at all, it renders whatever the connected PC sends. This is not a limitation we could remove with a build — it is what a PC VR headset is.
