Pimax Crystal Light — specification and verdict
Crystal Light is what Pimax made when it took its flagship apart and removed everything a PC-VR user does not strictly need. What is left is genuinely good: 2880 x 2880 per eye through glass aspheric lenses at 110 degrees horizontal, and a refresh rate that goes to 120 Hz — the only headset in this comparison that offers that over a tether. What was removed is the standalone processor, the battery, eye tracking and the wireless option. Interpupillary distance is set by hand between 58 and 72 mm, and two 6DoF controllers come in the box, with Lighthouse tracking available if you already own base stations.
Pimax sells directly and ships worldwide from its own store, which is the practical difference between this and headsets you have to source through a distributor. For our training it is a non-starter for the usual reason: it is PC-VR only, and our courses are Android applications, so nothing we publish will install on it. It is also a single-workstation device — every seat needs a PC with a DisplayPort 1.4a output and a card in the RTX 3080 class or better, which is a larger budget item than the headset. There is no fleet management, no kiosk mode, and no business tier of any kind.
For a simulator seat where sharpness and frame rate matter more than mobility — flight, racing, engineering review — Crystal Light is the cheapest way to a genuinely high-resolution image, and the 120 Hz mode is a real advantage for fast motion. For corporate training, look at it only if somebody has already decided the scenario runs on a PC; otherwise a standalone headset does the job with a fraction of the infrastructure.

Average pixel density is our own arithmetic: panel pixels divided by the field of view on the same axis. It is the standard approximation, and it runs lower than a published peak figure because a lens packs pixels denser at the centre.
Who this device is for
Crystal Light is the stripped-down Crystal: the same 2880x2880 panels without the eye tracking and without the standalone ambitions, at a price that made high-resolution PC VR reachable. It is a simulator headset — flight, racing, engineering review — and our training courses do not run on PC VR.
How it differs from its predecessor
Against the original Crystal it drops eye tracking and the modular tracking faceplate to cut the price. Against Bigscreen Beyond 2 it has a higher resolution and a much lower price, and loses badly on weight and refinement — 126 g here is the headset alone, and the Beyond is a different class of build.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
No eye tracking, no hand tracking, no standalone mode and no route for our applications. It needs a strong graphics card to drive 2880x2880 per eye at all, which is a cost outside the headset. Pimax's software and support record is the recurring theme in reviews, and it belongs in any purchase decision.

- More than the headset price suggests: 2880x2880 per eye at 90 or 120 Hz is a heavy load, and reviewers consistently pair it with a high-end card. Budget the GPU alongside the headset, or the resolution you paid for will be spent on lowering render settings.
- Why does the Crystal Light have no eye tracking?
- It was removed, along with the standalone capability, to bring the price down from the original Crystal — this is the cut-down model of that device. If foveated rendering matters for your simulator, the original Crystal or the Crystal Super are the ones that keep it.
