Pimax Crystal — specification and verdict
Pimax Crystal is the 2023 flagship that the Crystal Light and Crystal Super are both derived from. It gives 2880 x 2880 pixels per eye through glass aspheric lenses at 35 pixels per degree, with 72, 90 and 120 Hz modes, local dimming for genuinely dark blacks and Tobii eye tracking that both sets the interpupillary distance automatically and drives dynamic foveated rendering. Tracking is inside-out from cameras on the headset, with an optional Lighthouse faceplate for anyone who already owns base stations. Two controllers are in the box.
The reason it is marked as superseded rather than current is Pimax's own shop: the Crystal shows as temporarily out of stock with a notify-me button, and the page itself suggests looking at the Crystal Light instead. European partners still carry stock. For our training the verdict is the same as for the rest of the Crystal family — it is a PC headset, our Android courses do not install on it, and each seat needs a workstation. If you already own one, nothing here changes; it is a capable simulator display and Pimax Play still supports it.
Do not buy a Crystal new in 2026. The Crystal Light is cheaper for the same 35 pixels per degree if you can live without eye tracking, and the Crystal Super is sharper if you cannot. The only reason to hunt one down is a specific bundle price from a partner — and even then, check whether the Lighthouse faceplate you need is still sold separately.

Who this device is for
The original Pimax Crystal is a high-resolution PC VR headset with eye tracking and an unusual party trick: an optional Lighthouse faceplate, so it can run inside-out or on SteamVR base stations depending on what the room has. It is a simulator device — flight and racing above all — and our training courses do not run on PC VR.
How it differs from its predecessor
Against Crystal Light, which followed it, this one keeps the eye tracking and the standalone-capable design that the Light dropped to reach a lower price. Against the Crystal Super it is a generation behind on optics and modularity, but far cheaper on the second-hand market.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
No hand tracking, no standalone use in any way relevant to us, and no support for our applications. Pimax publishes no field-of-view figure we could verify, and no current price for this model. Historically, Pimax's software and support have been the weak part of ownership, which reviewers return to more often than they discuss the panels.

Pimax Crystal — frequently asked questions
- What is the Lighthouse faceplate on the Pimax Crystal for?
- It swaps the inside-out camera tracking for SteamVR base-station tracking, which is more precise and does not lose the controllers when your hands go behind your back. For a fixed simulator seat that is the better mode; for a room without base stations, the standard faceplate keeps the headset usable.
- Is the Pimax Crystal a good buy compared with the Crystal Light?
- It keeps eye tracking, which the Light removed, so for foveated rendering in a simulator it is the more capable device. The Light is newer, lighter and cheaper, and for someone who only wants resolution on a PC it is the more sensible starting point.
