Pimax Crystal Super — specification and verdict
Crystal Super pushes 3840 x 3840 pixels per eye — more than anything else here — at 72 or 90 Hz, with automatic interpupillary adjustment between 58 and 72 mm and Pimax's Dynamic Foveated Rendering 2.0 driven by on-board eye tracking. The unusual part is that the optics are modular: the standard QLED engine with a mini-LED backlight gives 127 degrees horizontal at 50 pixels per degree, a 57 PPD engine trades field of view for density at 106 degrees, an Ultrawide engine opens to 140 degrees, and a Sony micro-OLED engine swaps the panel entirely at 3840 x 3552. This table shows the standard engine; the others change the picture, not the headset.
Pimax states it plainly: Crystal Super has no battery and no wireless mode at all, so the DisplayPort cable is not optional. That makes it the most demanding entry here on the PC behind it — Pimax's own recommendation for the best experience starts at an RTX 4070 Ti and 32 GB of RAM, and a serious flight or racing setup will want more. Our courses do not run on it, as with every PC-VR headset in this comparison. What it buys instead is the ability to read a real instrument panel rendered in a simulator, at a density no standalone headset approaches, with foveated rendering carrying the frame rate.
Choose Crystal Super when the resolution genuinely decides the outcome — reading small gauges in a flight simulator, inspecting a CAD model at scale — and when there is a workstation-class PC per seat in the budget. Against a Varjo XR-4 it is several times cheaper and gives up mixed reality and enterprise support; against the Crystal Light it is roughly double the price for a third more pixels and eye tracking. For an EHS training fleet, none of these is the right question to be answering.

Average pixel density is our own arithmetic: panel pixels divided by the field of view on the same axis. It is the standard approximation, and it runs lower than a published peak figure because a lens packs pixels denser at the centre.
Who this device is for
Crystal Super is Pimax's high-end PC VR headset: 3840x3840 per eye, a 127-degree field of view, eye tracking and swappable optical modules. It is built for simulation — flight, racing, engineering review — and needs a serious graphics card behind it. Our training courses do not run on PC VR, so for a training organisation this is context rather than a candidate.
How it differs from its predecessor
Against the Crystal Light it is the full version: higher resolution, wider field of view, eye tracking and the modular optics the Light dropped. Against Varjo's XR line it delivers a comparable class of image for a fraction of the price, without the enterprise contract, the support organisation or the mixed-reality passthrough.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
The optical modules are configuration options rather than separate products, so our table shows the standard module and the others change the field of view and clarity. There is no hand tracking, no standalone mode and no route for our applications. Driving 3840x3840 per eye is a graphics-card problem before it is a headset problem.
