XREAL Air 2 Ultra — specification and verdict

The Air 2 Ultra is the most capable pair of display glasses here: 80 g, a 52-degree field of view, and two environment sensors that do real 6DoF tracking, hand tracking and 3D mapping. That last part is genuine and unusual in this class — content can stay where you put it in a room rather than following your head.

The catch is where the work happens. All that tracking data is streamed to a phone or a laptop, and any application is a build made with XREAL's SDK that runs on that host. There is no platform on the glasses to install anything into, so whatever you deploy, you deploy to the phone — including any device management.

Interesting for a development team exploring AR interaction on hardware that costs a fraction of a spatial headset. Not a fleet device: no on-board platform, no management, and a phone tied to each pair. It is also the clearest example of why this comparison separates "has 6DoF" from "can run your application".

Who this device is for

The Air 2 Ultra is the developer-facing member of XREAL's older line: 6DoF tracking and hand tracking on top of a birdbath display, aimed at people building spatial applications with XREAL's SDK. For a training organisation it is a device to understand the category with — our courses do not run on it, and it needs a host device to work at all.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against the Air 2 Pro it adds cameras, 6DoF and hand tracking and loses brightness — 500 nits is the dimmest in this catalogue's display class. Against the XREAL One line that replaced it, the One handles anchoring on-device and is brighter, while the Ultra keeps the spatial-development features.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

At 500 nits it struggles anywhere bright, and the 6DoF features need XREAL's SDK and a compatible host, not any USB-C device. There is no device management, no on-board platform and no support for our applications. It is also the older generation now, superseded by the One family.

Is the XREAL Air 2 Ultra real augmented reality?
It has the parts — cameras, 6DoF tracking and hand tracking — but the experience depends on an application built with XREAL's SDK and a host device to run it. Against a HoloLens or a Magic Leap it is a display with spatial features rather than a spatial computer.
Should I buy an Air 2 Ultra or an XREAL One?
The One, unless you are developing spatial applications. It is brighter, anchors the screen on-device and is the current line; the Ultra exists for the 6DoF and hand-tracking development features that the One does not offer.
