HTC VIVE Pro Eye — specification and verdict

Two 1440x1600 AMOLED panels at 90 Hz over a 98-degree horizontal field of view give a trainee a picture that is bright and high-contrast but visibly coarse on small text, because the PenTile layout puts only two subpixels behind each pixel. The added eye tracking is the whole point of the Eye variant and it is what makes gaze-based assessment, attention heatmaps and foveated experiments possible on this hardware. Everything else is a 2019 PC headset: a DisplayPort 1.2 and USB 3.0 cable to a workstation, manual IPD between 61 and 72 mm, and 550 g on the head before the strap. There is no passthrough-based room safety a trainee can rely on and no hand tracking, so every interaction runs through the two 6DoF wand controllers.

Nothing about this headset deploys at fleet scale. Each seat needs its own Windows workstation with a DisplayPort 1.2 output plus two Vive Base Stations mounted and powered in the corners of the room, which is why the headset alone was 799 USD and the full kit with controllers and base stations was 1599 USD. There is no vendor MDM or kiosk mode for it, so content updates, SteamVR versions and drivers are a job for your desktop management tooling, not for a headset console. Hygiene is the one easy part: the facial interface is foam on a plastic frame and can be wiped or swapped between users. New units are no longer a normal purchase in Poland or Germany; what circulates is refurbished and second-hand stock, and pricing there is whatever the reseller asks.

Do not buy this for VR training in 2026. It is a 2019 tethered headset that needs base stations, its maker's attention has long since moved to newer models, and our courses do not run on it at all. Buy it only if you specifically need cheap second-hand eye-tracking hardware for a research rig and already have the PCs and the lighthouse setup.

Who this device is for

Research groups, university labs and human-factors teams that need gaze data from a seated or room-scale PC VR rig and can live with a tethered, base-station setup. It is not for a training department that has to move headsets between sites, hand them to instructors, or update content without touching a PC.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

HTC's own site returns 403 to automated requests and no longer serves a dedicated Pro Eye product page, so nothing here could be upgraded to a manufacturer-level source; the eye tracker's published accuracy and sampling rate are therefore absent from this record. We also could not establish a discontinuation year or any end-of-support date for the eye-tracking runtime, and the weight with the headstrap is only published as an estimate, so it is left out rather than guessed.

Does the VIVE Pro Eye still need two Vive Base Stations, or can it track inside-out?
It has no inside-out tracking. The headset and both wand controllers are tracked by two external Vive Base Stations that you mount and power in the room, which is exactly why the headset on its own launched at 799 USD while the kit with controllers and base stations was 1599 USD. If nobody wants to drill mounts into the wall, this is the wrong headset.
What do you actually get for the extra money over a plain VIVE Pro?
Eye tracking, and essentially nothing else. The panels, the 1440x1600 per eye, the 90 Hz refresh and the 98-degree horizontal field of view are the same as the Pro released a year earlier, so the Eye variant is only worth the premium if gaze data is a deliverable of your project rather than a nice extra.
We already own VIVE Pro Eye kits. Can Skillsive courses run on them?
No. Our courses are standalone Android VR applications that install onto the headset itself, and the Pro Eye is a display tethered to a Windows PC over DisplayPort 1.2 and USB 3.0, with no on-board operating system to install anything on. Keep the Pro Eye rigs for whatever PC VR software they already run and use standalone headsets for the training fleet.
