HTC VIVE Cosmos — specification and verdict

Two LCD panels at 1440x1700 per eye run at 90 Hz behind an RGB stripe subpixel layout, and that layout is the reason small labels and gauge markings hold together better here than on the pentile OLED headsets of the same generation. HTC advertises a maximum 110 degrees of field of view; VRcompare measures 97 degrees horizontal and 94 vertical visible, which is closer to what a trainee actually gets. The six headset cameras do double duty: inside-out tracking, and a colour passthrough view so somebody can check the room without pulling the headset off. There is no eye tracking, no hand tracking and no face tracking, so every interaction runs through the two 211 g controllers, and IPD is set by a mechanical dial between 61 and 72 mm.

Every Cosmos needs its own Windows PC and its own DisplayPort 1.2 and USB-C run through the link box, so ten headsets means ten computers standing behind them. There is no MDM, no kiosk mode and no vendor device console: you manage PCs, not headsets. Wireless was never part of the package either — HTC sold the VIVE Wireless Adapter separately and then a Cosmos-specific attachment kit on top of it. Hygiene is the one part that works in a shared room: the face cushions come off for cleaning and HTC states that most prescription glasses fit inside the headset. The controllers run about 8 hours on AA alkalines, so a training room stocks batteries rather than docks, and in Poland and Germany the only supply left is second-hand.

Do not buy a Cosmos for training in 2026. It has been off HTC's own store since 2023, it costs a gaming PC per seat on top of the 699 USD it launched at, and our Android VR courses do not run on it at all. If the point is to run our courses, buy a current standalone headset; if you genuinely need tethered PC VR, buy something the manufacturer still sells.

Who this device is for

The device makes sense only for an organisation that already owns Cosmos units, the PCs behind them and a SteamVR or Viveport content library, and wants to run all of it until the hardware fails. Anyone specifying new equipment would be starting from a 2019 LCD at 1440x1700 per eye, a cable to a desktop and no fleet tooling at all.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

HTC never published a headset-only weight, a lens type, a tracking rate or a panel brightness for the Cosmos; the 645 g we list is VRcompare's figure and includes the halo strap. The advertised maximum of 110 degrees names no axis and sits far above the 97 degrees horizontal VRcompare measures, so the marketing number is at best a diagonal. There is also no end-of-support date published anywhere: the product has vanished from vive.com's line-up while the Cosmos support section and the Cosmos software both stay online, which makes this a wind-down that was never dated or announced.

Is the HTC VIVE Cosmos still sold in 2026?
No. HTC pulled the US Cosmos product page in 2023 and the headset no longer appears anywhere in vive.com's line-up. The Cosmos support section and the Cosmos software are still online, but HTC has never published an end-of-support date, so buying one today means the second-hand market with no warranty path and no guarantee of how long the PC-side software keeps working.
Can I use SteamVR base stations with a VIVE Cosmos?
Yes, but only by replacing the front of the headset. The Cosmos front cover is a mod, and HTC sold an External Tracking Faceplate that swaps the six inside-out cameras for base-station tracking — that swap is what turns a Cosmos into a Cosmos Elite. The faceplate, the base stations and the matching controllers are all separate purchases, and HTC's own accessory page for the faceplate no longer sells it.
Can I install an Android VR training app on a VIVE Cosmos over its USB-C port?
No. The Cosmos' USB-C and DisplayPort 1.2 connection carries video and data to a Windows PC — there is no Android device at the other end to install an APK onto. Everything the headset shows comes from SteamVR or Viveport running on that PC, which is why our standalone Android VR courses do not run on it and cannot be sideloaded onto it.
