DPVR E4 — specification and verdict
The E4 puts 1832x1920 pixels per eye behind Fresnel lenses at up to 120 Hz, which is enough for a trainee to read machine labels and instrument scales in a simulated workshop. Everything it renders comes from a Windows PC over DisplayPort 1.4 plus one USB 3.2 port, so there is no on-headset Android and none of our standalone courses run on it. Inside-out tracking uses four cameras and the bundled 6DoF controllers weigh 102 g each with about six hours of battery. IPD is set in software across 54-74 mm rather than by moving the lenses, so a trainee whose eyes sit outside that band cannot compensate mechanically. Grayscale passthrough exists but is a safety convenience, not a mixed-reality feature.
Each headset needs its own Windows PC with a DisplayPort 1.4 output and a GTX 1060 class GPU or better, which roughly doubles the per-seat cost above the 599 USD the manufacturer currently asks. There is no vendor MDM, no kiosk mode and no enterprise licensing programme, so a fleet is managed the way you manage the PCs: by imaging Windows and locking down SteamVR. The retractable halo strap with a silicone facial interface flips up, which speeds up handing the headset between trainees, but DPVR does not publish a swappable hygiene facial as a catalogue part. In Europe the E4 is sold through XR integrators rather than by DPVR directly, and at least one of them, Unbound XR, already lists it as end of life and points buyers at the E4 V2.
Do not buy the E4 for VR training with us. It is PC-tethered, so none of our Android standalone courses run on it, and the cable plus the required workstation make it a poor fit for a mobile training room. If you specifically need PC VR for a simulator rig it is a cheap way in, but for course delivery pick a standalone Android headset instead.

Who this device is for
This suits a simulator builder or a lab that already runs SteamVR content on workstations — driving and flight rigs, engineering visualisation, research setups where the PC is part of the installation. It is the wrong device for a training team that wants to carry headsets to a client site and run courses without a computer per seat.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
DPVR publishes 116 degrees of field of view with no axis named, while VRcompare's measured table gives 95 degrees horizontal visible and 115 diagonal — we kept the manufacturer figure and flagged the discrepancy. The two sources also disagree on weight, 285 g on the product page against 280 g at VRcompare, and the dimensions DPVR lists (192 x 281 x 124.5 mm) are far larger than VRcompare's headset-only figures, so we left dimensions out entirely. DPVR states no certifications, no MDM and no enterprise licensing anywhere on the product page, and the 480 g with-strap weight and the controller specification come from VRcompare, not from DPVR.
DPVR E4 — frequently asked questions
- Can the DPVR E4 be used without a PC?
- No. The E4 has no onboard computer: video arrives over DisplayPort 1.4 and data over one USB 3.2 port from a Windows 10 or newer PC with at least a GTX 1060 class GPU. It runs SteamVR titles from that PC, and it cannot install or run Android VR training apps on its own.
- Does the DPVR E4 have a physical IPD slider?
- No. DPVR adjusts the 54-74 mm interpupillary range in software rather than by physically moving the lenses, so the lens centres stay fixed. Users near the edges of that range, and especially outside it, may see softening at the edge of the image that no setting will fix.
- Is the DPVR E4 still sold now that the E4 V2 exists?
- DPVR still lists the original E4 in stock on its own shop at 599 USD in black and white, above the 549 USD it launched at in February 2023. European integrator Unbound XR, however, marks it end of life and recommends the E4 V2 instead, so treat local availability as uncertain and confirm before ordering a fleet.
