Varjo XR-4 Secure Edition — specification and verdict

The Secure Edition is the third shipping variant of the XR-4 family, and it exists for one reason: rooms where nothing may transmit. Varjo assembles it in Finland, states it is TAA-compliant, and offers a configuration with no radio components, running entirely offline. The optics match the Focal Edition — 4K per eye, 120 by 105 degrees, dual 20 MP passthrough with gaze-driven autofocus at 51 pixels per degree — with the night mode and headband of the 2026 series refresh.

This is procurement hardware, not something you evaluate in a browser: there is no price on Varjo's site and no store, only a sales conversation. What it buys is the ability to put mixed reality inside a closed-loop network — a simulator bay with no wireless, a facility where the supply chain has to be documented. Our courses do not run on it: it is a PC-tethered headset for simulation software, not an Android platform.

If your constraint is the network or the supply chain rather than the price, this is the row to read. For everyone else it is the wrong end of the market — the same optics as the Focal Edition with the parts a defence or aviation buyer needs and a civilian buyer pays for without using. It does not belong in an EHS training fleet, and Varjo does not pitch it there.

Who this device is for

Defence, aviation and government training programmes with two hard requirements: an air-gapped or radio-free environment, and a documented supply chain. It is the tier where the question stops being how sharp the passthrough is and starts being whether the headset is allowed in the building.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against the base XR-4 it adds the Focal Edition optics plus the secure configuration; against the Focal Edition it adds Finnish assembly, TAA compliance and the optional radio-free build, with the same visual specification. All three run on the same PC and the same software.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

Varjo publishes no price for any XR-4 variant — every SKU is quote-on-request — and no dimensions for any of them. The Secure Edition page states the TAA compliance and the offline configuration but no weight of its own, so nothing was carried over from the base model.

What does "no radio components" actually mean?
Varjo offers a configuration built without the wireless hardware, so the headset cannot transmit at all and runs entirely offline. It exists for closed-loop networks and facilities where a transmitting device is not permitted through the door.
Is it different optically from the XR-4 Focal Edition?
No. The visual specification matches the Focal Edition, including the gaze-driven autofocus passthrough. What the Secure Edition adds is where it is built, the TAA compliance and the radio-free option.
