Pimax 8K — specification and verdict
The Pimax 8K is the headset that made field of view a specification people argued about. Two hundred degrees diagonal - 170 horizontal, 130 vertical - is roughly double what a Quest offers, and at 3840 by 2160 per eye it carried more pixels than anything else on sale. The name is marketing arithmetic: it counts both panels together, so this is not an 8K display per eye. What the numbers hide is everything else. It shipped at 80 Hz rather than the 75 or 90 promised on the preorder page, it needs SteamVR base stations and controllers that are not in the box, and Pimax's own comparison pages repeat spec strings across siblings often enough that the safest reading of any figure is the one on that model's own page.
Three purchases, not one. The 899 dollars bought a headset and Pimax says so plainly - it does not include controllers or base stations - so add SteamVR Lighthouse 1.0 or 2.0 units and controllers on top, plus a PC with DisplayPort 1.4 and a graphics card Pimax pitched at GTX 1080 Ti class. There is no device management, no kiosk mode and no enterprise tier. Pimax never published an end-of-life notice; the product simply left the store, and by late 2019 its own collection page returned no products at all.
Not for training and not for buying now. Our courses are Android standalone builds; this is SteamVR on a PC, so they never ran on it. What it is worth is context: it proves how far field of view can be pushed and what that costs in distortion, PC load and price. If wide field of view genuinely matters to your scenario, Pimax's later Crystal line is where the idea continued with the wrinkles smoothed out.

Who this device is for
Simulation enthusiasts and anyone researching how wide field of view actually behaves. In 2018 the buyer was a flight or racing simmer who would trade comfort, price and PC headroom for peripheral vision. Not a fleet device and never sold as one.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Pimax published no release date or year for this model at level 1, so none is recorded - the preorder page was live in January 2018 and the store carried customer reviews by May 2019, which brackets it without dating it. The Body Size figure of 28.1 by 10.8 by 13.6 carries no unit anywhere on the page: as centimetres it is plausible, as millimetres impossible, so it is not converted. There is no IPD range and no end-of-life notice. Two warnings for anyone re-checking: the pimax-8k-series URL was later reused for the Vision series, so a scrape without a pinned timestamp ingests the wrong headset entirely, and the refresh rate on the preorder page promised 75 or 90 Hz which shipping hardware never delivered.

Pimax 8K — frequently asked questions
- Is the Pimax 8K really 8K?
- No. It has 3840 by 2160 pixels per eye, and the name counts both panels together to reach a figure that sounds like a television standard. Per eye that is a little over 4K wide, which was still more than anything else on sale in 2018. It is worth knowing because the same arithmetic runs through the rest of the range and makes cross-brand comparison misleading unless you check what a number is counting.
- What refresh rate does the Pimax 8K actually run at?
- Eighty hertz. The preorder page in 2018 promised 75 or 90 hertz per eye with Brainwarp pushing higher, and that was never delivered - every shipping page says 80. Confusingly, Pimax's own comparison page still carries marketing prose about a smooth 90 frames per second, but that belongs to the 5K Plus card next to it, and the 8K's own spec row on the same page says 80. When two figures appear on one Pimax page, the model's own row is the one to trust.
