Lenovo ThinkReality A3 — specification and verdict

The A3 tethers to a workstation over USB-C and puts up to five virtual monitors around you, at 130 g, with impact-rated ANSI Z87.1 lenses and swappable front frames and side shields. Two fisheye cameras give it room-scale tracking, so the screens stay where you place them rather than following your head.

Everything renders on the connected PC, and that is where any application and any management lives — the glasses contribute the optics and the tracking. Lenovo also sold an Industrial Edition paired with a phone for field work; the record here describes the PC Edition.

The most serious answer in this comparison to "I want my desk anywhere", and the only wearable display here with certified safety lenses. Not a device to deploy training to: no platform of its own, and a laptop tied to every pair.

Who this device is for

The ThinkReality A3 is a workstation accessory: see-through binocular glasses at 130 g that plug into a Windows PC and give you multiple virtual monitors, or a 6DoF view of a 3D model. It suits engineering review and desk work in constrained spaces, and it is the odd one out in this catalogue — a PC peripheral rather than a device.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against the XREAL display glasses it costs considerably more and adds 6DoF tracking and a Lenovo enterprise support path, which is usually the deciding factor. Against ThinkReality VRX, its stablemate, this is the see-through half of Lenovo's XR line — glasses for the desk rather than a headset for the floor.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

It needs a Windows workstation on a cable, so mobility is not part of the proposition. Lenovo publishes no field of view, brightness or resolution in the source we cite. There is no device management in our data, no on-board computing, and our applications do not run on it.

A Windows workstation over USB-C in the PC edition — the computer does everything, and the glasses provide the display and the 6DoF tracking. That makes it a workstation peripheral: excellent for virtual monitors at a desk, useless for walking around a plant.
Can the ThinkReality A3 replace physical monitors?
That is its main advertised use: several virtual screens around a laptop, which is genuinely useful in a small office or on a bench. Whether it works for a full day depends on the person — see-through binocular glasses are more tiring for long text work than a real monitor.
