XREAL 1S — specification and verdict
XREAL sells the 1S as the entry point to its spatial tier, though it is still a wearable display on a USB-C cable: what XREAL’s own X1 chip adds is native 3DoF, so a screen pinned in the room stays where you put it instead of following your head. It weighs 82 grams, runs off any USB-C DisplayPort host with no app to install, and reaches 52 degrees at 700 nits from a Sony micro-OLED panel. The headline feature is on-glasses 2D-to-3D conversion, which XREAL rates at up to 30 fps with 90–100 ms of latency — a figure worth knowing before the marketing sets expectations. XREAL publishes no per-eye pixel count for it, only “1200P”, and names no axis for the 52 degrees.
A display, not a platform. Nothing runs on the 1S — XREAL says so plainly: “No apps, no setup — simply connect to any USB-C DP-enabled device.” There is no SDK story we could verify, no device management and no enterprise licensing, so a training fleet would be managing the host devices rather than the glasses. Where it does earn a look is as a screen for work a laptop already does: it is light enough to wear for a shift, and the 3DoF anchoring means a pinned panel stays put while the wearer turns their head, which a fixed 0DoF viewer cannot do.
Good value for what it is, and honest about its limits in a way this class often is not — XREAL publishes that the 2D-to-3D conversion runs at up to 30 fps with 90–100 ms of latency rather than leaving it as a slogan. Two figures are missing that a buyer would want: the per-eye pixel count, which XREAL replaces with “1200P”, and the axis of the 52-degree field of view, which is never named and therefore cannot be compared with a rival quoting a diagonal. For our own courses it is not a candidate: there is nowhere to put an application.

Who this device is for
For somebody who wants a big private screen that stays where they put it, at the cheapest price XREAL charges for that. The X1 chip is the reason: it gives the 1S native 3DoF, so a pinned window holds its place in the room while the wearer turns their head, which no 0DoF viewer can do. XREAL positions it as entertainment rather than work — its own copy names airplane screens, phone-sized shows and games — and the 2D-to-3D conversion in the glasses is the feature it leads with.
How it differs from its predecessor
Against the XREAL One Pro it is the same silicon and the same 700 nits in a smaller, cheaper package: 82 grams against 87, 52 degrees against 57, 449 dollars against 599. So it is the One Pro’s optics cut down, not a weaker platform. Against the xbx a01+ the split is the other way round — the a01+ is brighter and lighter with HDR10, but has no anchoring and no 2D-to-3D. Against the ROG XREAL R1 the difference is refresh: the R1 reaches 240 Hz where this stops at 120.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
XREAL publishes no per-eye pixel count, only “1200P”, and never names the axis of the 52-degree field of view, so it cannot be compared with a rival quoting a diagonal. There is no published optical architecture either — no birdbath or prism claim — which is odd given XREAL brands the One Pro’s optics loudly. Physical dimensions, folded size and frame material are absent despite “fits in your pocket” being the tagline, and no power draw is stated, so there is no way to tell what it costs the host device’s battery. The TÜV certification is named without a designation or number.

XREAL 1S — frequently asked questions
- What does “on-glasses 2D-to-3D” actually deliver?
- XREAL converts ordinary flat content to stereo in the glasses themselves, with no software on the host, and publishes the limits rather than hiding them: up to 30 frames per second at 90 to 100 milliseconds of latency. That is enough for film and slow content and is not enough for anything fast. The useful part of this answer is that XREAL states it at all.
- Is the 1S the same as the “X1S” chip XREAL mentions elsewhere?
- No, and this catches people. The XREAL 1S is a product; “X1S Spatial Coprocessor” is the silicon inside the XREAL Aura, a different device. The 1S carries the plain XREAL X1. The two names sit in the same shared content on XREAL’s site, which is exactly how Aura’s specifications end up misattributed to this product.
