Vuzix Shield — specification and verdict
The Shield is a pair of certified safety glasses that happens to carry a display: two micro-LED projectors feed binocular waveguides in front of a protective, non-occluded lens. Vuzix never published a resolution, a field of view or a brightness figure for it, and the panels are monochrome, so the image is a line of text, a barcode result or a simple arrow — not a scene. It runs Android 10 on a Snapdragon XR1, has stereo cameras with barcode scanning, stereo speakers and voice input in 29 languages, and is driven by touchpads on the temples or a paired phone. For training that means remote assistance, checklists and picking prompts, not a simulation: there is no head tracking of any kind on the record, so nothing on the display is anchored to the room.
Buying a fleet in 2026 is the problem. Vuzix's own smart glasses page now lists only the M400 and the LX1, plus an AI glasses model in development; the Shield product page no longer exists and the device is not orderable from the maker. Vuzix has kept supplying the hardware as a private-label build for a partner, which is a contract, not a catalogue item. We found no vendor MDM or kiosk mode documented for the Shield, no published price, and no EU distributor stock for Poland or Germany, so any deployment now means second-hand units on Android 10 with no stated end-of-support date.
Do not plan a new rollout on the Shield. It is a good idea — a display inside real certified eye protection — that Vuzix has quietly stopped selling, and a monochrome, untracked display cannot carry our courses anyway. If you need eye protection with a screen on a live line, look at the M400 or LX1 that Vuzix still sells; if you need VR training, this is the wrong category entirely.

Who this device is for
It suits an EHS or field-service team that already owns Shields and wants text prompts, barcode results and a remote-expert video feed inside gear that passes an eye-protection audit. Anyone starting from zero should not be shopping for it: our VR courses do not run on Android smart glasses, and this specific model is no longer on Vuzix's price list.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Vuzix published very little about the Shield's displays: the spec sheet names the panel (microLED, monochrome green), the 30-degree diagonal field of view and 4100 nits ANSI brightness, but no resolution per eye, no refresh rate and no battery figure beyond 'multi-hour'. There is no weight for the glasses either - the 5.11 g on the sheet is the waveguide component alone, which several sites reprint as the product weight - and no RAM, storage or MSRP on any Vuzix page. VRcompare lists an RGB-stripe subpixel layout, which the manufacturer sheet contradicts by calling the display monochrome green, so we dropped both subpixel fields. There is no formal end-of-life notice either, only the absence of the product from vuzix.com.

- Can you still buy the Vuzix Shield in 2026?
- Not from Vuzix. As of August 2026 the smart glasses page lists the M400 and the LX1, with an AI glasses model in development, and the Shield product page is gone. The hardware has continued as a private-label build for a partner, so units exist, but there is no direct order path and no published price.
- Is the Vuzix Shield certified as safety eyewear?
- Yes. Vuzix states the Shield is ANSI Z87.1 certified, which is the point of the design: the display sits behind a protective, non-occluded lens rather than on a boom in front of the eye. That certification is the US impact standard; Vuzix does not publish an EN 166 rating, so a European site that requires EN 166 needs to check that separately.
- Can Skillsive VR courses run on the Vuzix Shield?
- No. Our courses are 6DoF VR applications and the Shield has no head tracking on its specification, monochrome micro-LED displays and no controllers. Even the on-glasses content is limited to text, barcodes and simple indicators. For VR training use a standalone Android VR headset; keep the Shield, if you have it, for remote assistance and picking prompts.
