RealWear Navigator 520 — specification and verdict

The Navigator 520 is not AR glasses in the sense most people mean: it is a rugged Android computer worn on a hard hat, with a small colour display on a boom arm that swings out of the way when it is not needed. It is built for noisy, dirty plants — IP66, MIL-STD-810H, a hot-swappable battery — and it is driven entirely by voice, because the hands are meant to stay on the work.

It runs AOSP Android and takes an ordinary application package, managed by RealWear Cloud or a standard MDM, so a third-party application deploys here the usual way — though not one of ours: our training courses are built for VR, and we do not ship an application for assisted-reality glasses. Two caveats decide the effort: there are no Google Mobile Services, so anything depending on Play Services has to be replaced, and there is no touchscreen — every control needs a voice label.

The safe default for hands-free work in a demanding plant, and one of the few devices in this comparison where a third-party application is a deployment rather than a project. It is not spatial AR: the panel is a fixed 2D screen, so it can show a checklist and a camera view, not a procedure anchored to a machine.

Who this device is for

The Navigator 520 is for hands-busy work: a monocular display on a boom, driven entirely by voice, with an eight-hour battery, IP66 and MIL-STD-810H. Its job is remote assistance and digital work instructions for a technician wearing gloves — not immersive training, and our courses do not run on it.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against the Navigator Z1 it is the lighter unit without the explosive-atmosphere certification: 274 g against 383 g, and no ATEX Zone 1 rating. Against the Arc 3, which replaced it in RealWear's line-up, it is heavier and better protected — IP66 and a military drop standard against the Arc 3's IP54.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

The 24-degree field of view is a small window at the edge of vision, not an overlay on the world — that is by design, and it is why this class is not comparable to spatial AR. There is no 6DoF tracking, no depth, and our applications do not run on it. Voice control is the primary input, which is a limitation in a genuinely loud environment.

Can a RealWear headset be used for VR safety training?
No, and it is not meant to be. It shows a small monocular display for documents, checklists and a remote expert's video — there is no immersive scene and no 6DoF movement. It is a tool for doing the work, not for practising it beforehand.
How does voice control work on the Navigator 520 in a noisy plant?
RealWear's WearHF layer maps every on-screen control to a spoken command, and the headset uses multiple noise-cancelling microphones tuned for industrial noise. It works far better than a phone would, but in genuinely extreme noise the answer is still a headset and a push-to-talk workflow.
