RealWear Navigator Z1 — specification and verdict

The Navigator Z1 is the same platform as the 520, certified for zones where an ordinary phone is simply banned: ATEX Zone 1 and CSA C1/D1, alongside IP66 and MIL-STD-810H. It carries a newer chip and more memory, and at 383 g it is the heaviest of the industrial glasses here — that mass is the certification, not the optics.

Same story as the 520: AOSP Android, ordinary application packages, MDM support and a voice-first interaction model without Google Mobile Services. An application written for the 520 runs here unchanged, which is what makes a mixed fleet of the two realistic.

Buy it for one reason — you need certified hardware in an explosion-hazard area — and accept the weight that comes with it. Everywhere else the 520 or the Arc 3 does the same job for less money and less strain on the neck.

Who this device is for

The Navigator Z1 is the version certified for explosive atmospheres: ATEX Zone 1 and CSA Class 1 Division 1, which is what lets it into a refinery, a chemical plant or a gas installation where an ordinary device is simply not allowed. Everything else about it — voice-first operation, monocular display, eight-hour battery — matches the 520.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against the Navigator 520 the difference is certification and weight: 383 g against 274 g, because intrinsically safe housing is heavier. If the site does not require ATEX, the 520 is the same tool for less money and less mass on the head.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

The certification is the product here, so check the exact zone and division your site requires — ATEX Zone 1 is not the same as Zone 0, and a mismatch means the device cannot be used at all. The 24-degree monocular display, the absence of 6DoF and the lack of support for our applications are the same as on the 520.

What does ATEX Zone 1 certification mean for smart glasses?
It means the device is built so it cannot ignite an explosive atmosphere that is likely to occur during normal operation — the requirement for large parts of refineries, chemical plants and gas installations. Without it, the device does not enter the area at all, which is why this variant exists.
Is the Navigator Z1 worth the extra weight over the 520?
Only where the certification is required. At 383 g against 274 g, the Z1 is noticeably heavier over a shift, and the display, battery and software are the same. If your site has no ATEX zone, the 520 is the better tool.
