HTC VIVE Pro — specification and verdict

The VIVE Pro puts 1440x1600 pixels per eye on AMOLED panels at 90 Hz, with 98 degrees of visible horizontal field of view and 90.46 degrees of binocular overlap. For training content that means labels and gauge faces read cleanly at arm's length, and the OLED blacks hold up in dark scenes such as night shift or confined-space work. Tracking comes from two external SteamVR 1.0 base stations sampling at 1000 Hz, which is precise over a large room but has to be installed and powered. There is no hand tracking and no eye tracking, so every interaction goes through the 203 g Vive Pro controllers with their trackpad, trigger and grip buttons. Our own Android standalone courses do not run on it at all: the headset is a display for a PC.

This is a PC VR rollout, not a headset rollout. Each seat needs a VR-capable Windows PC, an HDMI and USB Type-C connection, and two base stations mounted diagonally above the training area, which in practice means a dedicated room rather than a trolley you push between sites. HTC put the Vive Pro on sell-through end of life in March 2020, so there is no current enterprise licensing programme, no vendor MDM and no kiosk mode for it, and PL and DE availability today is second-hand stock or integrator leftovers. Hygiene is the one easy part: the facial interface is foam on a hard padded retractable strap and comes off for cleaning or replacement, and third-party wipeable interfaces are still made for this shell.

Do not buy the VIVE Pro for a training programme in 2026. It was discontinued six years ago, it cannot run our courses because they are Android standalone applications, and every seat drags a PC and two base stations behind it. If you already own a room of them, they still work as SteamVR displays for PC simulators; if you are buying now, buy a standalone Android headset instead.

Who this device is for

The only sensible audience left is an organisation that already has VIVE Pro hardware and a PC VR simulator written for SteamVR — a university lab, a research group, a driving or crane simulator with lighthouse-tracked props. For anyone starting a BHP or fire-safety programme from scratch it is the wrong shape: wired, room-bound and out of production since 2020.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against any current standalone headset the trade is the same one PC VR always made: the VIVE Pro's 1000 Hz base-station tracking is more precise over a big room and its AMOLED blacks are deeper, but it needs a PC, cables and wall-mounted hardware, and it will not run a single one of our courses.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

HTC's own product and spec pages for the Vive Pro now refuse automated requests, so the figures here come from VRcompare rather than the manufacturer. VRcompare lists 599 USD for the headset alone while HTC's Full Kit sold for 1399 USD when it was retired, and the two numbers are frequently confused. Weight with the strap is only an estimate at the source, so we left it out, and the mode of the two front passthrough cameras is not published anywhere we could verify. HTC has never announced a firmware or driver end-of-support date for it.

Is the HTC VIVE Pro still sold in 2026?
No. HTC put the Vive Pro and the Vive Focus on sell-through end of life in March 2020, replacing them with the Vive Pro Eye and Vive Focus Plus. Anything you find today is used stock or old integrator inventory, sold without a manufacturer warranty.
Do I need base stations to use the VIVE Pro?
Yes, two of them. The Vive Pro has no inside-out tracking: position comes from external SteamVR 1.0 base stations sampling at 1000 Hz, mounted diagonally above the play area and powered from the mains. That fixes the headset to one prepared room and rules out taking it to a client site in a case.
Will Skillsive VR training courses run on a VIVE Pro?
No. Our courses are Android applications that run on the headset itself, and the Vive Pro is a tethered display driven by a Windows PC over HDMI and USB Type-C, with no on-board Android system. To run our content you need a standalone Android headset; the Vive Pro can only be used for PC VR software written for SteamVR.
