Spectacles (2024 Developer Edition) — specification and verdict

Snap's 2024 developer edition is genuine standalone AR: 226 g, a 46° diagonal field of view, hand and voice input, and its own spatial engine. It is also a developer tool rather than a product — it is not sold outright but rented on a monthly developer subscription with a twelve-month commitment.

Applications are Lenses authored in Snap's own Lens Studio and published to its store — a closed vendor path, with no ordinary application package and no sideloading. An existing training application cannot be moved across; it would have to be rebuilt in Snap's tools.

Excellent for consumer AR experiments, unusable as work equipment: 45 minutes of runtime does not survive a shift. Interesting for what Snap does next, not for a deployment this year.

Who this device is for

The 2024 Spectacles are a developer kit, not a product: standalone waveguide AR with 6DoF tracking and hand tracking, leased to developers building Snap Lenses rather than sold to companies. They are in this catalogue because they are one of very few true see-through spatial devices you can actually get hold of — and because a 45-minute battery says a great deal about where the category stands.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against HoloLens 2 and Magic Leap 2, the other spatial AR devices here, these are the small, light, consumer-shaped one — and the least capable, with 46 degrees of field of view and a battery measured in tens of minutes. Against Snap's announced Specs, this is the development hardware that came first.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

Forty-five minutes of battery rules out any working use, applications need Snap's own Lens Studio rather than an ordinary Android build, and there is no device management. Our courses do not run on them. Snap distributes them through a developer programme rather than retail, so pricing here reflects that arrangement rather than a purchase.

Can a company buy the 2024 Snap Spectacles?
Not in the ordinary sense — Snap distributes them to developers building Lenses for its platform, rather than selling them as a product. For a company evaluating spatial AR, that also means no fleet management and no supported deployment path.
Why is the battery only 45 minutes?
Because true see-through AR in a glasses-sized body is a power problem before it is an optics problem: waveguides, projectors, cameras and 6DoF tracking in 226 g leave almost no room for a cell. That figure is the most honest single number about where consumer AR currently stands.
