Shiftall MeganeX Business Edition — specification and verdict
The Business Edition puts two 1.3-inch micro-OLED panels at 2560x2560 per eye behind pancake lenses at 120 Hz, which is enough resolution to read small labels, gauge faces and printed procedure text inside a simulation. It weighs about 330 g and hangs off a glasses-style frame with a nose pad rather than a strap, so a trainee puts it on and takes it off in seconds between stations. The point of the Business variant is the -7D to 0D dioptre dial and the 56-72 mm IPD range: short-sighted trainees dial the headset in instead of wearing their own glasses under it. It is not standalone. Everything runs on a PC over DisplayPort plus USB 2.0 through a converter box, and the Snapdragon XR1 inside only drives the inside-out tracking. Shiftall never published a field-of-view figure for it, so the size of the image is the one thing you cannot judge from the spec sheet.
This is a tethered SteamVR device, so every seat needs a VR-capable PC, the converter box and a cable run, and the cost per station is roughly double the headset price. Controllers are not in the box: it expects SteamVR controllers, with an X2 dongle included, which is another purchase and another charging routine. There is no vendor MDM, no kiosk mode and no enterprise licensing programme, so a fleet is managed the way you manage the PCs, not the headsets. The headset launched in Japan at 198,000 yen (about 1,350 USD) and never reached a general EU release, so a Polish or German buyer would have been importing it with no local RMA path. Hygiene is the one easy part: the foam facial interface is small and the frame barely touches the face, so wipe-down between trainees is quick.
Do not buy it for a training fleet. Our courses are standalone Android VR applications and they do not run on a PC-tethered SteamVR headset at all, and Shiftall's January 2026 notice about taking the MeganeX business over from Panasonic lists only MeganeX, MeganeX superlight 8K and MeganeX 8K Mark II as the models it will develop, sell and support. Who this device is for
It made sense for a Japanese engineering or design team running seated SteamVR content on workstations, where several people share one headset and half of them are short-sighted. The dioptre dial and the nose-pad frame are aimed squarely at that shared-desk pattern, not at a mobile training fleet moving between sites.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Shiftall publishes no field of view, no binocular overlap and no pixels-per-degree for this model, so image size is unverifiable from official material. The IPD range also disagrees: the manufacturer's page says 56-72 mm while VRcompare lists 62-72 mm, and we kept the manufacturer's figure. There is no published end-of-support or end-of-sale date, only the January 2026 transfer notice that omits the Business Edition from the supported line-up, and no official USD price at all, only a Japanese 198,000 yen figure converted by Road to VR.
Shiftall MeganeX Business Edition — frequently asked questions
- Does the MeganeX Business Edition need SteamVR base stations?
- No. It tracks inside-out in 6DoF using a Snapdragon XR1 in the headset, so it works with no lighthouses in the room. Shiftall also sells an outside-in SteamVR tracking attachment for people who want lighthouse-grade tracking; it adds weight, taking the headset from about 330 g to about 395 g.
- Why does the MeganeX Business Edition have a dioptre dial instead of prescription inserts?
- Because it was built to be shared. The dial covers -7D to 0D and pairs with a 56-72 mm IPD adjustment, so each user sets the headset to their own eyesight in seconds rather than ordering personal lens inserts. An eyeglass adapter is also included for astigmatism and for prescriptions outside that range.
- Can you still buy the MeganeX Business Edition in 2026?
- Effectively no. It launched in Japan in September 2023 at 198,000 yen and never got a general European release, and Shiftall's January 2026 notice on taking the MeganeX business over from Panasonic names only MeganeX, MeganeX superlight 8K and MeganeX 8K Mark II as the models it continues to develop, sell and support.
