Canon MREAL X1 — specification and verdict
The MREAL X1 is a video see-through mixed reality display: two 1920x2160 panels running at 120 Hz, fed by colour passthrough cameras at 60 fps. Its field of view is small for VR at about 58 degrees horizontal by 60 degrees vertical, and that is deliberate; Canon built it to register CAD geometry onto real objects at arm's length, not to fill a trainee's vision. The display module weighs 158 g and 359 g with the halo strap, and the strap detaches so the display can be held up to the face by hand. There is no computer inside: the image comes over a 10 m proprietary cable from a Windows workstation, and interpupillary distance is set by hand between 57 and 76 mm.
Each X1 needs a workstation Canon specifies as a 13th-generation Core i9 with 32 GB of RAM and an RTX 3070 or RTX A5000 class GPU, plus the MREAL Platform licence and the interface unit; the BX-40 Interface Box Kit is the option that lets a Thunderbolt 3 mobile workstation drive it instead of a desktop card. Sales and support run through Canon ITS and Japanese distributors, the documentation is Japanese only, and we found no Canon channel or price for Poland or Germany. There is no vendor MDM or kiosk mode, because the headset is a display rather than a computer, so fleet management means managing the PCs behind it. Canon publishes no swappable facial interface, so hygiene between users is limited to wiping the halo strap padding.
Do not buy this for VR safety training. Our courses are standalone Android applications and the X1 has no onboard computer, no controllers and no app store; it exists to put CAD models onto physical prototypes for design review. If your engineering team already runs MREAL, leave it there and buy a separate standalone headset for the training programme.

Who this device is for
Japanese manufacturers doing physical design review, prototype validation and assembly verification, who need CG registered onto real hardware at arm's length and already own the workstations and the MREAL Platform licence. It is not a headset for a training department, and outside Japan it is effectively unavailable.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Canon does not publish the display panel technology, any audio or microphone hardware, or a list price: both Mogura VR and Road to VR record the price as open, quoted per project. Canon's own spec sheet calls for a PCI Express Gen3 x4 interface card while the Daitron distributor listing says PCI Express 2.0 x4, and we could not resolve which applies to a 2026 order. As of August 2026 Canon has announced no end-of-sale or end-of-support date for the X1, so its shipping status rests on Canon ITS still listing it, not on a dated statement.
Canon MREAL X1 — frequently asked questions
- Can Canon MREAL X1 run standalone VR training courses?
- No. The X1 has no computer or operating system of its own: the display hangs off a 10 m proprietary cable to an interface unit and a Windows workstation running Canon's MREAL Platform. Android training applications, including ours, cannot be installed on it. Use a standalone headset for training and keep the X1 for CAD overlay work.
- Why is the MREAL X1 field of view only 58 degrees?
- Because it is a close-range video see-through MR device, not a VR headset. Canon states about 58 degrees horizontal by 60 degrees vertical, with camera and CG at 60 fps against a 120 Hz panel. That is enough to lay a CAD model onto a part in front of you, but the visible frame edge makes it unsuitable for immersive scenario training.
- Can you buy the Canon MREAL X1 in Europe?
- We found no European sales channel. Canon ITS sells and supports MREAL in Japan, all the documentation is Japanese, and the price is quoted as open rather than published. A European buyer would be importing hardware with no local support, on top of the required workstation and the MREAL Platform licence.
