Vuzix M4000 — specification and verdict

The M4000 replaces the M400's opaque panel with a waveguide and a projector, so the worker looks through the lens rather than around a screen. The image is a modest 854×480 at 28°, and above 1000 nits — the point here is not resolution but the unobstructed view, which matters where a blocked eye is a safety issue.

Android with partner device management, like the M400, so an ordinary application package installs and manages the same way. The one thing to check before committing: it is still on Android 11, so a minimum SDK or security-patch requirement can rule it out where the M400 would pass.

Pick it over the M400 only when seeing through the lens genuinely matters — inspection work, driving, anything where an occluded eye is a hazard. Otherwise the M400 gives a sharper image, a newer platform and a longer runway.

Who this device is for

The M4000 is the see-through member of the Vuzix industrial line: a waveguide display at 28 degrees, so information sits in front of the world rather than beside it, on the same Android base that accepts ordinary APKs. It suits inspection and guided assembly where the overlay needs to line up with what you are looking at.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against the M400 it trades brightness for see-through optics: 1000 nits against 2000, and a waveguide instead of a micro-OLED screen at the edge of vision. Both are monocular, both run Android and both take standard applications — the choice is whether the information should be over the work or next to it.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

A waveguide loses brightness and contrast in direct sunlight, and 1000 nits is half what the M400 offers. Battery is again around two hours, there is no 6DoF tracking, and our applications do not run on it. Vuzix publishes the resolution only in the product PDF, which is the source our table uses.

What is the practical difference between a waveguide and a monocular screen?
A waveguide projects the image into the lens so it appears over what you are looking at; a monocular screen sits at the edge of vision and you glance at it. For overlaying instructions on a component the waveguide wins; for reading a checklist in bright sunlight, the brighter screen usually does.
Is the Vuzix M4000 suitable for medical or cleanroom use?
Vuzix lists IEC 60601-1 and 60601-1-2 conformity for it, which is the electrical-safety and EMC standard family for medical electrical equipment, and the M400 adds a cleanroom classification. Always confirm the exact certificate against your own compliance requirement before deployment.
