Varjo XR-1 Developer Edition — specification and verdict
The XR-1 was Varjo's answer to a question nobody else was answering in 2019: what if the camera feed were sharp enough to work in. Two 12-megapixel cameras at 90 Hz fed the same bionic display as the VR-2, with photon-to-photon latency Varjo first put under 15 milliseconds and later revised to under 20. That let an engineer look at a real cockpit and a virtual instrument panel in the same view, which is why it sold into simulation and design review rather than to anyone else. The cost of entry was brutal even by professional standards — 9,995 dollars for the headset, 1,995 a year for the mandatory software subscription, plus two to four SteamVR base stations and a Thunderbolt 3 workstation to drive it.
Budget for four things, not one. The headset was 9,995 dollars; Varjo's mandatory Software and Support service added 1,995 a year, stated in the same sentence as the price; tracking needs two to four SteamVR base stations mounted in the room and bought separately; and the host must offer a Thunderbolt 3 port alongside two DisplayPort 1.2 outputs, which in 2019 meant a specific workstation rather than a gaming PC. Controllers are not in the box either. Support has stopped: Varjo recommends Varjo Base 3.7.2 as the last release for this generation and has published no dated end-of-life notice, unlike the XR-3 and VR-3 that followed.
Do not buy, and do not plan a rollout around one. It is a landmark device — the first headset where the camera feed was sharp enough to read real instruments through — but it is a SteamVR peripheral for simulation and design review, our Android courses never ran on it, and its total cost of ownership ran to roughly 12,000 dollars before base stations and a workstation. If you own one and it still works, keep it for the job it was bought for. If you are specifying mixed-reality hardware now, this device's descendants are the XR-4 Focal Edition and XR-4 Secure Edition.

Who this device is for
Simulator builders, cockpit and vehicle designers and human-factors researchers between 2019 and 2022 who needed a real cockpit and a virtual display in one view, and had a Thunderbolt 3 workstation and a tracked room. Today it is a reference point rather than an option.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Varjo published no dimensions, no IPD range in millimetres and no microphone for the XR-1, in the product pages, the Quick Guide or the Safety PDF. More usefully, Varjo revised three figures between its 2019 and 2020 pages and both sets are its own: passthrough latency moved from under 15 milliseconds to under 20, weight from 1065 to 1050 grams without the counterweight, and the camera viewing angle from 82 by 82 degrees to 94 degrees circular. We carry the later values. There is no dated end-of-support notice, only a recommendation to stay on Varjo Base 3.7.2, and the 87-degree field of view is published without an axis.

- How good was the Varjo XR-1 passthrough compared to a modern headset?
- Different rather than worse. Two 12-megapixel cameras ran at 90 Hz into a display Varjo rated at over 60 pixels per degree in the focus area, which in 2019 meant you could read a physical instrument label through the headset — something mainstream passthrough still struggles with. The trade-offs were the ones a professional device accepts: a tether, base stations on the wall, a Thunderbolt 3 workstation, and about 1.3 kilograms on your head with the counterweight fitted.
- Why does the XR-1 latency figure differ between sources?
- Because Varjo changed it. The 2019 product page and the announcement both state under 15 milliseconds photon to photon; the 2020 page consistently states under 20, and the revision looks deliberate rather than a typo since the older figure appears nowhere on it. Both numbers are Varjo's own. We report the later one and record the earlier as historical, rather than choosing the flattering figure.
- Can I still use a Varjo XR-1 today?
- If it already works, yes, with limits. Varjo recommends Varjo Base 3.7.2 as the last release for this generation, so the software is frozen, and there is no dated support commitment. It still needs two to four SteamVR base stations, SteamVR controllers you supply yourself, and a host with a Thunderbolt 3 port plus two DisplayPort 1.2 outputs. Our training courses never ran on it: they are Android standalone builds, not SteamVR.
