Varjo Aero — specification and verdict
Varjo Aero was the company's attempt to bring professional-grade fidelity to a single enthusiast rather than a simulation department. Dual mini-LED panels at 2880 x 2720 per eye, 115 degrees of field of view and 35 pixels per degree through variable-resolution aspheric lenses that push pixel density towards the centre of vision, the way an eye works. Automatic interpupillary adjustment and 200 Hz eye tracking — the same rate as today's XR-4 Series — plus a three-point headband and active cooling for long sessions. No cameras, so no mixed reality: this was a VR-only Varjo.
Varjo's page now opens by stating that the Aero has been discontinued and pointing at the XR-4 Series. Its practical shape was always demanding: SteamVR base stations and controllers were expected to be in the room already, nothing came in the box but the headset, and the PC behind it had to be a serious one. Our courses do not run on it. What it still does, for anyone who owns one, is deliver clarity that much of 2026's hardware has not caught up with, with full access to Varjo Base and no subscription attached.
If a simulator seat in your organisation runs an Aero, there is no urgency to replace it — the optics hold up and Varjo's software support did not vanish with the product page. Do not buy one second-hand for training: no mixed reality, no fleet management, no Android, and a support story that ends whenever Varjo decides it does. The current answer from the same maker is the XR-4 Series, at several times the price.

Average pixel density is our own arithmetic: panel pixels divided by the field of view on the same axis. It is the standard approximation, and it runs lower than a published peak figure because a lens packs pixels denser at the centre.
Who this device is for
Varjo Aero was the company's attempt at a prosumer headset: 2880x2720 per eye with eye tracking and aspheric lenses, without the enterprise price of the XR line. Discontinued now, but still in simulator setups — this page is for people running one, since our courses do not target PC VR at all.
How it differs from its predecessor
Against the XR-4 series that followed it, Aero has no passthrough mixed reality, no hand tracking and a lower resolution, and needs SteamVR base stations. What it kept is the thing simulator users cared about: clarity across the lens for reading instruments, at a fraction of what Varjo's current line costs.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Discontinued, with no hand tracking, no passthrough, no standalone mode and a dependency on external base stations. Varjo launched it at 1,990 USD but no longer sells it or publishes a current price. Our training applications do not run on PC VR at all, so for a training organisation this is a device to recognise rather than to deploy.

- Is the Varjo Aero still worth using in a simulator?
- For a flight or driving simulator that already has base stations, yes — the lens clarity that made it worth buying has not degraded, and instrument text stays readable. What has changed is support: it is discontinued, so plan around what happens when a cable or a headstrap fails.
- Does the Varjo Aero need base stations?
- Yes, SteamVR base stations, and that is the practical difference between it and any inside-out headset: excellent tracking in a fixed installation, and a full re-setup every time the room changes. For a permanent simulator that is a fair trade; for anything portable it is not.
