Sony SRH-S1 (XYN headset) — specification and verdict
The SRH-S1 pairs two 1.3-type micro-OLED panels at 3552x3840 per eye with pancake optics and a published 55 pixels per degree, which is roughly double what a mainstream training headset resolves. At that density a trainee could read an engraved valve tag or a machine nameplate rendered at true scale, and the 90 Hz ceiling is enough for the slow, deliberate inspection of a static model. What it cannot do is run a training course: Siemens states that NX Immersive Designer is the only software available for this head-mounted display, so there is no route to load our Android VR courses onto it. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, eye tracking, hand tracking and colour passthrough are all present, but they serve a CAD design review, not a scenario.
You do not buy the SRH-S1 from Sony. Orders opened on 23 January 2025 through Siemens sales, at $4,750 for the headset with its Ring and Pointing controllers, and the device is still offered that way in 2026. On top of that hardware price sits an NX licence with Immersive Designer, which Siemens sells under its value-based licensing rather than at a listed figure, so the real cost of a seat is not something you can total from a web page. Sony publishes no fleet management, no kiosk mode and no enrolment story for this device, which is consistent with a product sold one CAD workstation at a time rather than in racks of twenty. Hygiene parts, spare facial interfaces and PL or DE availability all run through the Siemens channel too.
Do not buy the SRH-S1 for VR training. It is an engineering peripheral for teams already running NX, and the money buys resolution you cannot put a course on. If the goal is BHP or industrial training in Poland or Germany, spend a tenth of the $4,750 on a standalone Android headset that accepts our applications, and revisit Sony only if it ever opens the platform beyond Siemens.

Who this device is for
Product engineering and industrial design teams already licensed for Siemens NX, who want to review a full-scale 3D model at 55 pixels per degree and flip the visor up to go back to a keyboard. It is aimed at a handful of CAD seats, not at a training room. Anyone whose brief is workforce training is looking at the wrong device.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Sony never published a weight, a field of view, a battery figure or a storage size for the SRH-S1, and the specification page it does maintain says only "4K resolution" rather than a pixel count. The sources also disagree: VRcompare lists 3552x2840 per eye where Road to VR and UploadVR both give 3552x3840, matching the 13.6 megapixel figure and Sony's own ECX344A panel, so we carry the taller number. Sony says "six cameras and sensors in total" while VRcompare counts four tracking cameras, and no one states an end-of-support date.
Sony SRH-S1 (XYN headset) — frequently asked questions
- Can I install my own VR training app on the Sony SRH-S1?
- No. Siemens, which is the only sales channel for the headset, states that NX Immersive Designer is currently the only software available for it. The device runs on Android and a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, but Sony has published no developer store, sideloading route or enterprise distribution path, so our courses cannot be deployed to it today.
- Is $4,750 the full cost of a Sony SRH-S1 seat?
- No. The $4,750 covers the headset with its Ring and Pointing controllers as ordered through Siemens from 23 January 2025. Using it still requires an NX licence with Immersive Designer, which Siemens sells under value-based licensing rather than at a published price, so budget for a CAD seat on top of the hardware.
- How does the SRH-S1 flip-up visor work in practice?
- The display section hinges upward on a rigid retractable halo strap, so an engineer can lift the panels away and return to a monitor and keyboard without unstrapping. Sony designed it for alternating between a physical desk and the virtual model during a design review, and both controllers are meant to be used alongside keyboard input.
