Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 1) — specification and verdict
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 has no display of any kind. It is a 12 MP camera, a five-microphone array and open-ear speakers built into a Wayfarer frame, running on a Snapdragon AR1 and paired to a phone. Meta later added on-glasses AI as a software update, which is what actually made it sell. Meta publishes runtime (about four hours, plus 36 hours from the charging case) but no weight, no dimensions and no radio specifications.
Not a deployable device. There is no display, no application platform and no device management, so nothing in a training stack reaches it; it pairs with a personal phone and a personal Meta account. Where it does turn up in industrial conversations is hands-free capture — an inspector recording what they see — and there the questions are about consent and recording policy rather than about fleet rollout.
Buy it as eyewear, not as equipment. It matters to this catalogue because it is the device that made AI glasses a real category, and because its successor and the Oakley line are direct descendants. For training it does nothing: no screen means no instruction can be shown, and the camera raises a privacy conversation before it solves any problem.

Who this device is for
Consumers, and researchers looking at what hands-free capture does to a workplace. There is no display, so nothing can be shown to a wearer; the value is entirely in recording, listening and asking an assistant a question without reaching for a phone.
How it differs from its predecessor
Against Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 it is the same idea with roughly half the battery (four hours against eight) and 1080p video instead of 3K. Against Meta Ray-Ban Display, which arrived in 2025 with a monocular screen and a neural wristband, it is a different product class entirely: this one shows you nothing.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Meta publishes no weight, no dimensions, no storage capacity, no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi generation and no end-of-support date for Gen 1, and the figures circulating in the press contradict each other — 48 g against 52 g, with some outlets swapping the two generations. Nothing here is carried over from Gen 2.

- Does Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1 have a display?
- No. It has a camera, microphones and speakers and nothing to look at. Meta's first glasses with a screen are Meta Ray-Ban Display, a separate 2025 product.
- Can it show instructions to a worker?
- No, and that is the whole point of the distinction. Without a display there is no way to put a step, a warning or a checklist in front of the wearer — it can only capture and speak.
