Meta Quest 1 — specification and verdict
The original Quest arrived in 2019 at 399 dollars with 1440 x 1600 pixels per eye behind Fresnel lenses, an IPD slider, Snapdragon 835 silicon and inside-out 6DoF tracking that needed no external sensors — which is precisely why it became the first headset companies bought in quantity. Its panels were OLED, the only Quest generation that used them, and Meta's own documentation lists 60 and 72 Hz as its refresh rates: an app that asks for 90 Hz runs at 72 on this device. The weight and the storage tiers shown here come from a mirror of Meta's retired specification page, marked as such, because Meta no longer hosts one.
This is the one entry in the comparison where the life-cycle dates decide everything. Meta maintained the system software with critical bug fixes and security patches through August 2024 and published that end date in advance. It stopped admitting new Quest 1 apps on 31 January 2024, and on 2 May 2025 it ended the ability for developers to update existing Quest 1 apps at all. So while the headsets still switch on and still run the software already installed on them, there is no remaining route for us to build and publish a Quest 1 version of a course. That is why this row says our courses do not run on it, unlike Quest 2, which is merely old.
If a store cupboard in your company holds a set of these, they are not a training fleet any more — they are devices frozen at whatever was installed before May 2025, on an operating system that has not had a security patch since August 2024. Do not plan a programme around them, and do not buy them second-hand. Quest 3S costs less new than the original Quest did in 2019 and will actually receive the course you want to run.

Average pixel density is our own arithmetic: panel pixels divided by the field of view on the same axis. It is the standard approximation, and it runs lower than a published peak figure because a lens packs pixels denser at the centre.
Who this device is for
Quest 1 is in this catalogue for completeness and for one practical reason: some companies still have them in a cupboard. Meta ended application updates on 31 August 2024, our courses no longer run on it, and there is no path back — the honest advice is to retire the hardware rather than plan training around it.
How it differs from its predecessor
Against Quest 2 it is the older OLED display at 1440x1600 with a Snapdragon 835 — the generation before Meta's line became viable for business use. Everything a current Quest does for training, from colour passthrough to the application platform itself, arrived after this device.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Support ended on 31 August 2024: no new applications, no security updates, and our courses do not install. There is no device management, no colour passthrough and no eye tracking. Treat any remaining units as e-waste or as loan hardware for demonstrations that need nothing current.

Meta Quest 1 — frequently asked questions
- Do Skillsive courses run on the original Meta Quest?
- No. Meta stopped accepting application updates for Quest 1 on 31 August 2024, so current builds cannot be installed on it at all. This is a platform limit rather than a performance one, and there is no workaround.
- What should a company do with old Quest 1 headsets?
- Retire them from the training programme and keep at most one or two for demonstrations that need no current software. They receive no updates, run no current courses, and their batteries are by now at least six years old — which is its own reason not to hand them to trainees.
