Pimax Vision 8KX — specification and verdict

The Vision 8KX drives 3840x2160 per eye at 90 Hz over DisplayPort 1.4, the highest text legibility of any headset in this catalogue: procedure cards, gauge markings and small labels stay readable without leaning in. The 159-degree horizontal field of view is far wider than the usual 100 to 110 degrees, so a trainee catches peripheral hazards instead of looking through a letterbox. The price of that is the tether and the tracking: it needs a PC with a DisplayPort 1.4 output and two SteamVR 2.0 base stations mounted in the room. There is no passthrough, no hand tracking and no eye tracking, so every interaction goes through Valve Index controllers, which are not in the 1299 USD headset box.

There is no fleet story here at all. The 8KX is a PC peripheral, so what you actually manage is the workstation behind it, with whatever MDM already covers your Windows estate; Pimax offers no device management, no kiosk mode and no enterprise licensing. Each seat means a headset, a PC, two base stations on stands or wall mounts and a pair of Index controllers, which is why the full bundle was listed at 1849 USD rather than 1299 USD. The facial interface is foam, so hygiene between trainees means wipes or a spare interface, and Pimax sells into Europe by direct shipping rather than through a distributor network in Poland or Germany.

Do not buy this for a training programme. Our courses are standalone Android applications and do not run on a PC-tethered headset at all, and Pimax now carries the 8KX only on its outlet page, marked out of stock and final sale. If somebody in the organisation genuinely needs 3840x2160 per eye for CAD or simulator work on a PC, it remains a credible display; for VR training, buy a standalone headset instead.

Who this device is for

This is for PC simulation users - flight and racing simulators, design review, engineering visualisation - who already own a strong GPU and a room wired for base stations, and who value 3840x2160 per eye and 159 degrees of horizontal view more than they mind a cable. It is not for a training team that wants to hand a headset to somebody and walk away.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

Pimax publishes no end-of-production or end-of-support date for the 8KX, only an outlet entry, so how long firmware and PiTool updates continue is unknown and we left discontinuedYear and supportEndsOn empty. The launch date is contested: the reference sheet gives 2019-02-19, while Road to VR documented repeated slips and the headset reached buyers much later. The vertical field-of-view figures in that same sheet contradict each other, so we kept only the horizontal pair, and the advertised 200-degree diagonal is a marketing number rather than the 159 degrees horizontal recorded here.

Pimax Vision 8KX — frequently asked questions

Do I need SteamVR base stations for the Pimax Vision 8KX?
Yes. The 8KX has no inside-out cameras; it is tracked by two SteamVR 2.0 base stations that you mount in the corners of the room and power from mains. That is why Pimax listed a 1849 USD bundle with controllers and base stations next to the 1299 USD headset-only price. Without base stations the headset does not track at all.
Will Skillsive VR training courses run on the Pimax Vision 8KX?
No. Our courses are standalone Android applications and the 8KX has no onboard computer - it is a pair of panels driven over DisplayPort 1.4 and USB 3.0 by a Windows PC running SteamVR. There is no way to install our courses on it. Use a standalone Android headset for training and keep the 8KX for PC simulation work.
Can you still buy a Pimax Vision 8KX in 2026?
Not from Pimax as a current product. The Vision 8K X now appears only on the Pimax outlet page, flagged out of stock and sold as a final sale with no return or exchange, and newer Pimax headsets have taken its place. Anything you find in 2026 is leftover or second-hand stock with an unstated support horizon.
