Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED — specification and verdict

The Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED swaps the QLED optical engine of the other Crystal Super models for a Sony micro-OLED one, giving 3840x3552 per eye across a 116-degree horizontal field of view at 90 Hz. Pimax publishes 53 pixels per degree, which is enough for a trainee to read a machine label, a gauge face or a printed procedure inside the scene without leaning in. Eye tracking at the headset level drives dynamic foveated rendering, which is what makes that resolution survivable on a normal gaming PC. It is a PC VR headset with a DisplayPort cable: there is no onboard Android, so none of our standalone courses run on it.

Every station needs its own gaming PC, a DisplayPort run and a USB Type-C connection, so the cost per seat is the $2,199 headset plus a machine capable of driving it. Pimax sells direct from its own store to the EU including Poland and Germany, but the purchase is split: $1,299 up front and a $900 Prime Fee charged after a 14-day trial through Pimax Play, which is awkward for a purchasing department that expects one invoice. There is no vendor MDM and no kiosk mode, so a fleet is managed as PCs, not as headsets. Hygiene is a foam facial interface on a rigid retractable strap; the IPD is motorised across 58 to 72 mm, which at least makes swapping between trainees quick.

Do not buy this for standalone VR training. It is a PC VR device, our Android courses do not run on it, and the price and the DisplayPort tether make it a poor fit for a rotating group of trainees. It earns its place where visual acuity is the whole point and a workstation is already there: simulator seats, flight and driving rigs, design review.

Who this device is for

For simulator and engineering teams that already have RTX-class workstations and need the sharpest micro-OLED image they can get on a tether. Not for a training department that wants headsets it can hand out, charge overnight and manage centrally.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

Pimax does not publish a headset weight, dimensions, brightness in nits, or any detail on the passthrough beyond the fact that it uses the four tracking cameras, so we cannot say whether it is colour or greyscale. VRcompare still lists the price as $2,135 with a $936 fee and a 105-degree visible field of view; Pimax's own page says $2,199 with a $900 Prime Fee and 116 degrees horizontal, and the manufacturer wins. Hand tracking appears in Pimax's feature bullets, but the 120 Hz Ultraleap unit is a separately purchased accessory, so we record the headset as having none out of the box.

Does the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED need SteamVR base stations?
No. Pimax ships it with SLAM tracking off its four onboard cameras, which tracks the headset and the Reality Controllers with no base stations at all. Lighthouse is optional: Pimax sells a separate Crystal Super Lighthouse faceplate for people who already run a SteamVR 2.0 setup or need base-station accuracy for a simulator rig.

Pimax splits the $2,199 total into an upfront payment and a Prime Fee that only becomes payable after you have received the headset and run a 14-day trial through Pimax Play. It is a trial-then-pay structure rather than a discount, and the full $2,199 is what the device costs. For a company buying on a purchase order it means two charges against one order, which is worth flagging to finance before you commit.
Can the micro-OLED optical engine be swapped for the QLED one on a Crystal Super?
Yes, that is the point of the Crystal Super design. Pimax sells the optical engines separately from the headset body, so the same Crystal Super can run the Sony micro-OLED engine at 3840x3552 and 116 degrees, or a QLED engine at 3840x3840 with a different field of view. It also means an optics failure can be repaired by replacing the engine rather than the whole headset.
