ClassVR — specification and verdict
The current Xplorer model puts a single 5.5-inch LCD behind the lenses, which Avantis quotes as 3664x1920 across the panel and which works out at 1832x1920 per eye, driven by a Snapdragon XR1 Gen 1 with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage plus a microSD slot. Tracking on Xplorer is head rotation only: a trainee looks around a 360 scene and selects things by tilting their head, with no controllers in the box and no hand tracking. That is enough for a guided tour of a substation or a hazard-spotting scene, and not enough for anything where the trainee has to step around an object or operate it with their hands. The Xcelerate model launched alongside it adds four-camera 6DoF tracking, optical controllers and a flip-up visor, but Avantis publishes almost no numbers for it. Neither model publishes field of view, refresh rate or battery life.
ClassVR is bought as a kit, not as a headset: sets of eight or thirty for Xplorer, sets of four for Xcelerate, each with a charging and transport case, through approved education partners on a quote. Content and device management run through the ClassVR Portal, where a teacher pushes an experience to every headset at once and watches each screen live; that portal is also the only supported way to get content onto the device. The vendor's own support FAQ states the headsets do not authenticate against RADIUS or Active Directory, so they sit outside a normal corporate network policy. An Eduverse or Eduverse+ subscription is required on top of the hardware, sold in one, three or five year terms, and the facial interface is detachable for cleaning between users.
Do not buy ClassVR for workplace EHS training. It is a school product whose whole value is the Eduverse library and the teacher portal, and there is no published route to install our Android courses on it. If you want the same classroom-style control over a fleet, take a Quest-class standalone headset with an XR MDM instead and keep your own content.

Who this device is for
Schools and further-education colleges that want thirty headsets a teacher can drive from one screen without an IT department behind them. For a company running BHP or fire-safety courses this is the wrong shape of product: a 3DoF headset with no controllers, no hand tracking and a closed content library cannot deliver a procedural training scenario.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Avantis publishes no field of view, no refresh rate, no battery capacity or runtime, and no weight for Xplorer; the only weight figure anywhere is Xcelerate's "under 450 g". There are no stated certifications and no end-of-support date for either the 2017 original or the models it replaced. VRcompare still documents ClassVR as the 2017 headset with an ARM Cortex-A17, 1280x1440 per eye and 16 GB of storage, which is two hardware generations behind what the manufacturer now sells. The per-eye figure here is the vendor's combined 3664x1920 panel halved, because Avantis quotes only the panel.
ClassVR — frequently asked questions
- Can I install my own VR training courses on a ClassVR headset?
- No. Content reaches a ClassVR headset through the ClassVR Portal and the Eduverse library, and Avantis publishes no sideloading or third-party APK route even though the device runs Android. If you need your own courses on the hardware, buy a standalone headset with an open deployment path instead.
- What is the difference between the ClassVR Xplorer and the Xcelerate?
- Xplorer is the K-12 model: a Snapdragon XR1 Gen 1 headset with head-rotation tracking only, selection by head tilt, sold in sets of eight or thirty. Xcelerate, announced with it in August 2025 for high school and further education, adds four-camera 6DoF tracking, optical controllers and a 90-degree flip-up visor, and ships in sets of four.
- Will ClassVR headsets join a company Wi-Fi with Active Directory login?
- No. The ClassVR support FAQ states the headsets do not support enterprise authentication such as RADIUS or Active Directory; they are built for a simple school network with no central login. Plan for a separate SSID or a guest network if you were considering them on a corporate site.
