YVR 2 — specification and verdict
YVR 2 traded resolution for thickness: pancake optics and a 350 g body, but only 1600x1600 per eye across a 95-degree diagonal field at 90 Hz. That is fine for spatial tasks — walking a scene, picking up a tool, following a hand gesture demonstrated by an instructor — and poor for reading. Procedure text, MSDS labels and small gauge markings on a machine model have to be authored oversized or the trainee leans in to read them, which is exactly the behaviour that breaks a timed exercise. The Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 with 8 GB of RAM will drive a course scene, and 128 or 256 GB is enough storage for a library of them. Note that the YVR 2 has no documented controller-free hand tracking, so every interaction goes through the two bundled 6DoF YVR Controllers.
There is no vendor MDM and no kiosk mode we could find, so a fleet of these is managed headset by headset, by hand, at the end of every training day. The 5300 mAh battery gives about 2.5 hours, which covers a morning session but not a full day without a charging break, and the pack is not hot-swappable. The facial interface is a separate foam part that comes off for wiping between trainees, which is the one genuinely fleet-friendly thing about the design. Play For Dream sells the headset directly at 399.99 USD, but there is no Polish or German distributor, no local RMA path and no enterprise licensing offer — a broken unit goes back to the vendor, not to a reseller down the road.
Do not buy this for a training fleet. It is a 2022 XR2 Gen 1 headset whose maker has since renamed itself Play For Dream and moved its engineering to a much newer device, and our courses have no supported deployment path onto the YVR platform. If the pancake form factor and the 350 g weight are what attracted you, look at a current Android standalone with vendor device management instead.

Who this device is for
This is for someone who wants to hold an early mass-produced pancake headset — a hardware researcher, an optics course, a museum of form factors. It is not for a safety training operator: no fleet management, no local support in the EU, and a resolution that undercuts even its own predecessor the YVR 1.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
YVR never published a spec sheet we could still reach: yvrdream.com now redirects to a 404 on the Play For Dream domain, and the surviving store page lists a price and nothing else. So there is no first-party figure for IPD adjustment range, brightness, Wi-Fi generation, Bluetooth version, dimensions or charge time, and no stated end-of-support date for the YVR platform. Passthrough is recorded as grayscale because the only description available says it runs off the tracking cameras; nobody publishes a passthrough resolution or frame rate.
YVR 2 — frequently asked questions
- Is the YVR 2 still sold now that YVR renamed itself Play For Dream?
- Yes. Play For Dream still lists the YVR 2 on its own store at 399.99 USD, well under the 750 USD it launched at in July 2022. The company's current engineering effort is its newer Play For Dream MR headset, so treat the YVR 2 as inventory being sold down rather than a product with a roadmap.
- Can Skillsive VR safety courses be deployed on a fleet of YVR 2 headsets?
- No. The YVR 2 runs Android on a YVR-operated platform with no vendor MDM or kiosk mode that we could verify, so there is no supported way to push a course to twenty headsets or lock them to a single app. Our courses are marked as not running on it; pick an Android standalone with real device management if you need a fleet.
- Is 1600x1600 per eye enough to read procedure text in the YVR 2?
- Only if the text is authored large. 1600x1600 per eye over a 95-degree diagonal field is a step down from the 2160x2160 of the earlier YVR 1, and small labels, gauge scales and dense instruction panels lose legibility. Scenes built around movement and object handling hold up much better than scenes built around reading.
