HTC VIVE Flow — specification and verdict

The Flow puts two 1600x1600 LCD panels behind pancake lenses at 75 Hz across a 100-degree diagonal field, which is enough for video and static 360 scenes but noticeably short of what a training scene with small labels needs. The Snapdragon XR1 with 4 GB of RAM is a 2018-class part, roughly two hardware generations behind anything we would deploy a course on, and the 64 GB of storage is fixed. Head tracking is 6DoF from two cameras, so a trainee can lean and step, but there is no hand tracking at all. The built-in dioptre dial means most short-sighted trainees can work without glasses, which is genuinely useful for a shared unit. None of that changes the core problem: this is a media viewer, and our courses do not run on it.

The Flow cannot be handed to a trainee on its own — it draws all its power over USB-C from a phone or a 7.5 W power bank, so every unit in a fleet needs a battery, a cable and somebody to charge them. Setup goes through the VIVE phone app, and the headset is bound to the Viveport platform rather than an open Android store, so there is no path for sideloading our course builds. HTC does list the Flow under VIVE Business with its Device Management System and kiosk mode, so a locked-down demo fleet is technically possible. The facial interface is fabric rather than wipeable silicone, which is the wrong material for a headset passed between people in a working day.

Do not buy the Flow for safety training. At the current 199 USD it is a cheap 189 g video viewer, and that is exactly what it is good at; our courses will not install on it and there are no 6DoF course controls that a trainee would recognise. If you want a light standalone headset for training, spend the difference on a current XR2-class device and keep the Flow for lobby or trade-show video loops.

Who this device is for

This suits a marketing team that wants a pocketable headset for seated 360 video at an event, or a wellbeing programme playing guided-relaxation content. It does not suit anyone running a BHP or fire-safety course: no hand tracking, an XR1 chipset from 2018, a closed Viveport platform and a permanent tether to a power bank rule out unattended trainee use.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against any current standalone in this catalogue the Flow is not a competitor but a different product: 75 Hz against 90 Hz or more, one 2018 chipset generation against two, and no battery of its own. The only field where it wins outright is weight, at 189 g headset-only.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

HTC's own product and specification pages return 403 to automated fetches, so the figures here come from the VIVE store listing, VRcompare and reviews rather than the manufacturer's spec sheet. The dioptre dial's range is published inconsistently — one review gives it as 0 to 6 dioptres without a sign — so we left the range out rather than guess. HTC publishes no Wi-Fi standard, no headset dimensions, no passthrough specification and no end-of-support date for the Flow, and the last software release notes we could find date from 2024.

No. The Flow has no usable internal battery — it draws power over USB-C from an Android phone or a 7.5 W power bank for the whole session, and the small on-board cell only covers a few minutes so you can swap batteries without shutting the headset down. Setup also runs through HTC's phone app.
Can Skillsive VR safety courses be installed on a VIVE Flow?
No. The Flow runs HTC's Viveport-bound Android build with no open install path for our course packages, and it has neither hand tracking nor a controller scheme our scenes are built around. Use a current standalone Android headset with 6DoF controllers instead; the Flow stays a video viewer.
Is the VIVE Flow still sold in 2026, and for how much?
Yes. HTC's US store still lists it as VIVE Flow with Controller at 199 USD, down from the 499 USD launch price of November 2021. Treat that as clearance pricing on 2018-class silicon rather than a bargain, and check local availability separately in Poland and Germany.
