Meta Quest 2 — specification and verdict
Quest 2 shares its panel resolution with Quest 3S at 1,832 x 1,920 per eye and supports the widest range of refresh rates in this comparison, from 60 up to 120 Hz, behind Fresnel optics. The decisive gap is passthrough: Quest 2's is monochrome, so anything that asks a trainee to work with the real room in view is off the table. Meta never published a field of view for it, so that cell stays empty rather than being filled from a review; the ≈503 g weight shown here comes from a mirror of Meta's retired spec page, marked as unofficial.
Meta's own product page now states that Quest 2 is no longer available and points buyers to Quest 3S. There is no current business tier, no facial interface still listed, and no vendor support path for new deployments — only used and refurbished stock through third parties. For an organisation that already owns a batch, they keep running the training apps they ran yesterday; for anyone buying now, this is not a purchase decision, it is a replacement-planning one.
Do not buy Quest 2 in 2026. If you already run them, keep using them for fully virtual scenarios and plan the replacement cycle toward Quest 3S, which costs little more and restores colour passthrough, official availability and a support path.

Average pixel density is our own arithmetic: panel pixels divided by the field of view on the same axis. It is the standard approximation, and it runs lower than a published peak figure because a lens packs pixels denser at the centre.
Who this device is for
Quest 2 is not a device to buy in 2026 — Meta withdrew it in 2024 — but it is very much a device to keep running. Our courses still work on it, so a company with a cupboard of them can keep training on the hardware it already paid for, and use this page to decide when the sharpness and the ageing battery justify replacement rather than another year of use.
How it differs from its predecessor
Against Quest 3 the gap is two generations of silicon and a complete change of optics: XR2 Gen 1 against Gen 2, Fresnel lenses at 1832x1920 against pancake at 2064x2208, and no colour passthrough at all — the black-and-white view is the reason mixed-reality scenarios are not an option here. What Quest 2 keeps is the weight, at 503 g the lightest of the family.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Meta lists no weight for it any more — the figure in our table comes from an archived spec page — and there is no eye tracking, no colour passthrough and no vendor device management. The larger question is support: this is discontinued hardware, so plan around the day system updates stop, and treat the batteries as the part that will decide the fleet's retirement date.

Meta Quest 2 — frequently asked questions
- Do Skillsive training courses still run on Meta Quest 2?
- Yes. Quest 2 runs the same Horizon OS application format as the newer headsets, so the courses install and run — the difference the trainee sees is sharpness, not features. Colour passthrough is the one capability that is missing entirely, so mixed-reality exercises are out.
- Can you still buy a Meta Quest 2 for a company?
- Not new from Meta — it was withdrawn in 2024. What remains is the second-hand market and old retail stock, and for a company that means no warranty path and a battery of unknown age. If the goal is new headsets, Quest 3S costs the same as Quest 2 did and is two generations newer.
- How long will Meta Quest 2 keep receiving updates?
- Meta has not published an end-of-support date, which is exactly why it should be planned for rather than assumed away. Treat any discontinued headset as a fleet with a horizon: keep the courses working, but budget replacement before the platform, not the hardware, forces the decision.
