Pimax Portal View — specification and verdict
Portal View is not a headset in the usual sense. The compute, the 1920x2160-per-eye LCD and the battery all live in a Pimax Portal handheld console, which slides into a face housing with aspheric lenses; the two detachable Portal Controllers clip into VR grips for 6DoF. The single LCD runs at up to 144 Hz with a 100-degree diagonal field of view and a peak 27 pixels per degree, which is enough for signage-sized text but not for reading a procedure card at arm's length. IPD is not continuous: three fixed positions between 58 and 68 mm, so a trainee whose eyes fall between them gets a compromise. Snapdragon XR2 with 8 GB puts raw performance in Quest 2 territory, but positional tracking from the four cameras was reported as unfinished when reviewers tried the VR mode.
There is no fleet story here at all. Portal View shipped through the consumer Pimax Store on the Pimax Store and SteamVR platforms, with no vendor MDM, no kiosk mode and no enterprise licensing programme, so twenty units means twenty devices configured by hand. Hygiene is the one bright spot: the facial interface is foam on a plastic and fabric body, and the padded retractable strap wipes down, but Pimax does not sell a training-grade replacement pad. Availability in Poland and Germany was always thin — Pimax ships from its own store rather than local distribution — and the 449 USD price excluded the WiGig wireless module, which was a separate purchase.
Do not buy Portal View for training. It is a discontinued consumer experiment whose VR mode was still incomplete when reviewers got hold of it, and our courses have no supported path onto the Pimax Store platform. Anything budgeted around 449 USD is better spent on a current standalone Android headset with a real device-management console.

Who this device is for
It suits collectors and hobbyists who want an Android handheld that also does VR, and it suits nobody running a training programme. If you already own a Portal console and want to see what the VR housing does, that is the whole audience; if you are equipping a room of trainees, the missing IPD range, the unfinished tracking and the absent management tooling all count against it.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Pimax published no headset weight, no dimensions and no VR battery runtime in minutes, and the two secondary sources we have disagree on the strap pack: 6000 mAh against 8000 mAh, which is why the record keeps only the 10000 mAh total. A distributor lists 367 g without saying whether that covers the console, the housing or both, so we left weight out rather than guess. Passthrough is described elsewhere as running off the tracking cameras, but the source marks that an estimate. We also found no Pimax retirement notice and no end-of-support date; the discontinued status rests on the distributor's "product never available again" and the model's absence from the current line-up.
Pimax Portal View — frequently asked questions
- Do you need the Pimax Portal handheld to use Portal View?
- Yes. Portal View is a housing, not a self-contained headset: the Snapdragon XR2, the 1920x2160-per-eye LCD and the battery are all inside the Portal console, which slides into the front of the View. Without the console the View does nothing, and the two Portal Controllers also have to be clipped into their VR grips to give the four cameras something to track.
- Can Skillsive VR training courses run on the Pimax Portal View?
- No. Although the device is Android and 6DoF on paper, its software lives on the Pimax Store and SteamVR platforms with no vendor MDM, no kiosk mode and no enterprise licensing, so there is no supported way to push and lock a course onto a fleet. We mark it incompatible and recommend a current standalone Android headset with a management console instead.
- Why does Portal View's IPD click into only three positions between 58 and 68 mm?
- The IPD adjustment is a three-position mechanical detent rather than a continuous slider, so the lens spacing snaps to one of three detents between 58 and 68 mm. For a shared training headset that matters more than it sounds: anyone whose interpupillary distance sits between two of those steps loses some edge sharpness and can pick up eye strain over a long session, and there is no software IPD compensation to fall back on.
