Pimax Portal QLED View — specification and verdict
The Portal QLED View is a Switch-style handheld whose 367 g main unit slides into a head-mounted housing and becomes a standalone headset. One 5.46-inch QLED panel with mini-LED local dimming carries 3840x2160, which in VR mode is 1920x2160 per eye at up to 144 Hz across a 100-degree diagonal field of view, with a published peak of 27 pixels per degree. That is workable for procedural training where the trainee handles objects, and marginal for reading signage, gauge faces or small print. IPD is a hardware adjustment in three fixed steps of 58, 63 and 68 mm, so a trainee whose eyes fall between the steps takes a compromise. Compute is a Snapdragon XR2 with Kryo 585 and Adreno 650, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage plus an SD card slot: XR2 Gen 1 class, not current silicon.
There is no fleet story here. Pimax sells the Portal through its own consumer store and has never published a device-management or kiosk path, so ten units mean ten devices provisioned by hand. As of 10 August 2026 that store still sells the QLED 8+256G configuration at 399 USD against a 599 USD launch price with controllers, but it lists the handheld only — the VR housing that turns it into the View is not on the shelf beside it. The 10,000 mAh total splits into a 4,000 mAh main unit and a 6,000 mAh headstrap battery, which is two things to charge per seat. The housing uses a retractable padded fabric strap and a foam facial interface, so hygiene between trainees means wiping fabric and foam rather than swapping a wipe-clean insert, and there is no distributor or service channel in Poland or Germany.
Do not buy this for training. It was a consumer hybrid console first and a headset second, the VR housing that made it a headset is no longer part of the store listing, and Pimax's own attention has moved to the Crystal headsets. If you want Pimax hardware in a lab, look at the Crystal family; if you want a training fleet, buy a standalone headset with a vendor management console behind it.

Who this device is for
The Portal QLED View suits a hobbyist or a research group interested in hybrid handheld VR form factors, and essentially nobody else. A training team needs remote provisioning, spare parts and a support horizon in years, and a 2023 crowdfunded console sold as a handheld in a consumer store answers none of that.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Pimax publishes 367 g for the handheld unit but never a weight or dimensions for the assembled headset, never a battery runtime in minutes, never a charge time, and never a hand-tracking claim. It has also never stated an end-of-support date, so nobody can say how long the Pimax Store will keep serving the Portal while the Crystal line takes the roadmap. VRcompare records the video input as Mini-HDMI where Pimax's own listing says Micro-HDMI, and flags passthrough as an estimate, so we left passthrough out rather than guess what the four tracking cameras show. A narrow-lens option is documented at 60 degrees diagonal against the standard 100, and no source says which lens shipped in the View kit.
