PICO Project Swan — specification and verdict
PICO previewed Project Swan on 2 March 2026 alongside PICO OS 6, and it is the thinnest entry in this whole comparison on purpose. Two things were actually announced about the hardware. The first is the display: a new generation of micro-OLED panels at close to 4000 PPI, which PICO translates into an average of 40 pixels per degree and more than 45 in the centre of the view — the density at which small text stops being a compromise, which is why PICO frames the device as something that replaces monitors. The second is the compute: a dual-chip design pairing a flagship processor with PICO’s own XR silicon for the mixed-reality pipeline, quoted at 12 ms of latency. Everything else is genuinely unannounced. There is no per-eye resolution (a density figure is not a resolution, and dividing one out of the other would be our arithmetic, not PICO’s specification), no refresh rate, no field of view, no weight, no lens type, no IPD range, no memory or storage, no battery figure, no controller and no price. Those fields are empty here rather than filled in from the PICO 4 Ultra.
PICO OS 6 is Android-based standalone XR — the same platform family our courses already run on across every other PICO in this comparison — so the platform answer is yes, while the device answer is "nobody has tested anything on it". PICO has opened a global early-access programme for developers, which is what makes the platform claim more than a guess: the tooling exists and can be built against today. What does not exist is any of the enterprise side: no business device manager, no fleet licensing, no distribution. If Project Swan matters to your plans, the thing to watch is not the pixel density, it is whether PICO announces a business SKU for it the way it did for the 4 Ultra.
What is known: the display density, the dual-chip compute design, the operating system, a developer programme, and a launch window of late 2026. What is not: essentially the rest of the specification, and the price. That is an unusual shape for an announcement — it is a platform reveal aimed at developers rather than a product launch aimed at buyers, and it should be read that way. There is no purchasing decision to make here yet. Who this device is for
Project Swan is PICO's announced next-generation standalone headset, with a custom dual-chip design pairing a flagship SoC with PICO's own XR co-processor. It matters to us for one reason: it runs PICO OS, the platform our courses already target, so unlike most announced hardware it would arrive supported rather than needing a port.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Almost everything is unpublished: no resolution, no field of view, no weight, no price and no launch date beyond a quarter. Those fields are empty here rather than filled from leaks. There is no device management announced, and no independent review coverage exists because nobody outside PICO has used one.

- It is announced as a PICO OS device, which is a platform our applications already target — so unlike a new platform, this would be a compatibility check rather than a porting project. That said, nothing is confirmed until hardware exists and we have tested a build on it.
