PICO Neo3 Pro Eye — specification and verdict

The Pro Eye is the same chassis as the Neo3 Pro with two changes that matter in practice. Two 400 x 400 infrared cameras track the eyes at 120 Hz, which is why this model ended up in so many research, assessment and attention-measurement projects rather than general training. And the mechanical IPD adjustment is gone entirely: PICO calls it self-adaptive across 55 to 71 mm, set from where the cameras see the pupils instead of from a physical stop. Memory goes from 6 to 8 GB. Everything else is shared — 1832 x 1920 per eye at 72 or 90 Hz, 98 degrees, Snapdragon XR2, 256 GB, Android 10, 395 g without the straps, replaceable face foam and a DisplayPort link for 4K SteamVR.

The eye tracking is the whole reason to treat this as a separate device rather than a memory variant. Gaze data lets a scenario record where a trainee actually looked — did they check the pressure gauge before opening the valve — which is a class of assessment no other headset in this comparison under a thousand euros could do in 2021. The self-adaptive IPD is a genuine advantage in a shared fleet too, because it removes the setup step people skip. Against that: no first-party fleet management available to a new customer, no purchase route left, and silicon two generations behind. Our courses do run on it.

If your organisation bought Pro Eye units for gaze-based assessment, they are still the cheapest working eye-tracked fleet you will find and worth maintaining. Do not start anything new on them. The current answer for eye tracking in a manageable fleet is VIVE Focus Vision or PICO 4 Ultra Enterprise with the eye-tracking SKU — and if gaze data is the point of your programme, tell us before you buy, because it changes how a scenario has to be built.

Who this device is for

The Neo3 Pro Eye is the variant with eye tracking, which in 2021 made it one of the cheapest ways to get gaze data out of a standalone headset — the reason most of the units in Europe went to universities and research groups rather than to training halls. Our courses run on it; PICO has discontinued the line.

How it differs from its predecessor

Against the plain Neo3 Pro it adds eye tracking and 8 GB of memory instead of 6 GB, on identical optics and the same 395 g body. Against PICO 4 Enterprise, which also has eye tracking, it is a generation behind on optics and passthrough.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

Discontinued, with no device management and no enterprise licensing, and the eye tracking needs an application built to use it — the hardware alone produces nothing. Fresnel optics at 1832x1920 and a 98-degree field of view are dated, and the passthrough is monochrome.

Can eye tracking on the Neo3 Pro Eye be used for training analytics?
Only through an application written for it: the headset exposes gaze data through PICO's SDK, and nothing appears in a course that was not built to record it. Where it does work, gaze on a hazard is the most direct evidence of attention that VR training can produce.
