PICO Neo 2 — specification and verdict
The Neo 2 puts 1920x2160 per eye behind a 101-degree field of view, which in 2020 made it one of the sharpest standalone headsets for reading text inside a training scene. The panel refreshes at 75 Hz, low enough that fast head turns smear noticeably compared with a 90 Hz headset. Inside is a Snapdragon 845 with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, a generation older than the XR2 silicon every current course is built against, so complex scenes have to be simplified before they run acceptably. Tracking is inside-out from two cameras, and the two 6DoF controllers use electromagnetic sensor fusion rather than optical tracking, so they keep working behind the trainee's back or below the waist. There is no hand tracking and no eye tracking on this model; eye tracking was the separate Neo 2 Eye variant.
PICO no longer sells the Neo 2 and no longer publishes a product page for it: pico-interactive.com/us/neo2.html now redirects to the Neo 3. There is no vendor enterprise licensing programme you can still sign up for, so fleet management means a third-party MDM. ManageXR still supports Neo 2 hardware, but moved it to Long Term Support on 1 June 2026, meaning critical hotfixes only and no new features. Hygiene is the usual foam facial interface on a 670 g headset with a rigid retractable strap; PICO does not publish a swappable-facial part number, so wipeable covers are aftermarket. Battery is 5000 mAh for roughly three hours, which covers a training day only with a charging break, and any spare units now come from the used market.
Do not buy a Neo 2 in 2026. It is out of production, its vendor page redirects to a successor two generations old, and its Snapdragon 845 is the weakest tier we still call usable. If you already own a fleet, our courses will run on it and a third-party MDM will still deploy to it, so keep it in service until the batteries go; for new purchases go to current XR2-class standalone hardware instead.

Who this device is for
This is for organisations that bought Neo 2 units in 2020 or 2021 and want to know whether the fleet is worth keeping. It is not a purchase recommendation for anyone starting now: the 75 Hz panel, the lack of hand tracking and the 2018-era chipset all cost you comfort and content headroom that current headsets give you for less money.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
PICO published no end-of-sale or end-of-support date for the Neo 2, so we carry no discontinuation year on the record - the strongest date we have is a third party's, ManageXR moving the device to Long Term Support on 1 June 2026. VRcompare lists 2048x2160 per eye, while Road to VR and UploadVR both report a 3840x2160 panel split as 1920x2160 per lens; we use the reported figure. VRcompare also notes passthrough through the tracking cameras, but nobody published its colour mode, resolution or frame rate, so we leave passthrough off the record entirely.
PICO Neo 2 — frequently asked questions
- Is the PICO Neo 2 still supported in 2026?
- Not by PICO. The manufacturer's own Neo 2 page redirects to the Neo 3, and there is no enterprise licensing programme you can still join for it. The nearest thing to live support is third-party: ManageXR moved Neo 2 hardware to Long Term Support on 1 June 2026, so it still receives critical hotfixes but no new features.
- What is the difference between the PICO Neo 2 and the Neo 2 Eye?
- The Neo 2 Eye added Tobii eye tracking and launched at 900 USD against 699 USD for the plain Neo 2; Road to VR reported it also runs about 20 grams heavier. Everything else - the 1920x2160 per eye LCD, 75 Hz, 101-degree field of view, Snapdragon 845, 128 GB - is shared. The device on this page is the model without eye tracking.
- Do the PICO Neo 2 controllers need to stay in view of the headset?
- No, and that is the one thing this headset still does better than most. The two 6DoF controllers combine electromagnetic and inertial sensing instead of relying on the headset's two cameras seeing them, so reaching behind your back or working below waist height does not break tracking - useful in training tasks where the trainee handles equipment out of their own line of sight.
