Lenovo Mirage VR S3 — specification and verdict
The Mirage VR S3 pairs an unusually sharp panel for 2020 — 1920x2160 per eye across a 101-degree horizontal field of view — with head tracking that is non-positional. A trainee can read fine print in a 360-degree video or a static scene, but cannot lean in, step around a machine or reach for anything, because the headset does not track the position of the head or the hands. The single bundled controller is 3DoF as well, runs on two AAA cells, and offers a trackpad plus face and side buttons rather than a tracked grip. Behind the panel sits a Snapdragon 835 with 64 GB of storage and a microSD slot, roughly the silicon of a 2017 phone, so real-time 3D scenes are limited. Battery life is quoted at three hours from a 4200 mAh cell.
Lenovo sold the headset from Q3 2020 under the ThinkReality umbrella with its IT portal for pushing applications and content to a fleet, and with LISS support attached, in North America, China, Japan, the UK, France and Spain. None of that is available to a new customer in 2026: Lenovo has wound down the ThinkReality XR business and the product is gone from its line, so a buyer is looking at second-hand units with no vendor support path. The facial interface is a wipe-clean plastic and foam plate, which is the one part of the design that still holds up for shared use. At 278 g for the headset and 475 g with the strap it is comfortable in short sessions, but the total cost of a deployment is now dominated by the risk of unsupported hardware rather than by the sub-450-dollar launch price.
Do not buy it for training. Our courses need positional 6DoF tracking and tracked controllers, and the Mirage VR S3 has neither, so nothing we ship runs on it. If you inherited a rack of them, they still work as 360-degree video players; for anything interactive move to a current 6DoF standalone headset.

Who this device is for
The remaining audience is an organisation that already owns these units and shows 360-degree footage — safety walkthroughs, site inductions, recorded procedures — where nobody needs to move or grab. Anyone buying new, or anyone whose content asks the trainee to pick up a tool, is in the wrong place here.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
Lenovo never published a RAM figure, an IPD range, optics type or panel brightness for this headset, and reseller SKU names are the only hint at memory. There is no published end-of-support or end-of-service date, which for a 2020 Android 8-era device is the number that matters most. Launch coverage quoted a 110-degree field of view while the spec sheets that survive say 101 degrees, and we could not reconcile the two because Lenovo's own pages now block retrieval.

- No. Its head tracking is non-positional 3DoF and the single bundled Mirage VR S3 Controller is 3DoF too, so the headset registers where you look but not where you stand. That rules out any training scenario that involves walking around equipment or handling objects.
- Can you still buy a Lenovo Mirage VR S3 with ThinkReality support in 2026?
- No. The headset launched at under 450 dollars in 2020 in six markets and is now discontinued, and Lenovo has wound down the ThinkReality XR business that provided its IT portal and LISS support. Second-hand units exist, but there is no vendor management, warranty or software path behind them.
- Will Skillsive VR courses run on the Mirage VR S3's Snapdragon 835?
- No, and the chip is only half the reason. Our courses are 6DoF Android VR applications with tracked-controller interaction, which a 3DoF headset cannot present at all; on top of that the Snapdragon 835 and Adreno 540 are 2017-class silicon well below what our scenes assume.
