DPVR P2 — specification and verdict

The P2 has no positional tracking at all: it follows where you look, not where you move, so leaning in to read a gauge or stepping around a machine does nothing. Panels run 1832x1920 per eye, which is enough for 360° video and large on-screen text but not for fine detail on a virtual instrument panel. The Snapdragon XR1 with 6 GB of RAM is two hardware generations behind current standalone silicon and will not carry an interactive, physics-driven training scene. The single bundled BC301 wand is 3DoF as well, with a trackpad, face buttons and a trigger — a pointer, not a pair of hands. For a trainee this means guided viewing and simple pointer selection, and nothing that requires reaching, grabbing or walking.

Fleet management is the P2's genuine strength: DPVR lists the P2 as an officially supported ManageXR device, so kiosk mode, remote app distribution and device grouping are available without building your own tooling. The 5700 mAh battery sits in the hard retractable headstrap and is rated around three hours, which covers a school day of short sessions but not a continuous arcade shift. 128 GB of internal storage plus a microSD slot taking cards up to 1 TB means large 360° video libraries can live on the device rather than streaming. The foam facial interface is the part that touches skin and is the part you will be replacing between users; DPVR does not publish a wipe-clean alternative. In Europe the P2 sells through XR distributors rather than DPVR directly, so pricing and lead times in PL and DE come from the reseller, and the AAA batteries in every controller become a real consumable at fleet scale.

Do not buy the P2 for our courses — they will not run on it, and no software update changes that, because the limitation is the missing positional tracking rather than the performance. It is a reasonable purchase if your content is 360° video or a seated panoramic walkthrough and you want ManageXR kiosk control at around 449 USD. If you need interactive VR training, spend the money on a 6DoF standalone headset instead; a cheap 3DoF unit that cannot run the content is not a saving.

Who this device is for

Schools, museums, VR arcades and marketing stands showing 360° film to a rotating queue of visitors, where sessions are short, seated and identical every time. Also plausible for safety induction videos that only need a headcount and a completion record. It is not for anyone who wants a trainee to perform a procedure with their hands.

What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish

DPVR publishes remarkably little: its own product page gives RAM, storage, battery, IPD stops and strap range, and states no panel technology, no resolution, no refresh rate, no field of view and no weight. Resolution, refresh rate and the 650 g figure therefore come from VRcompare rather than the maker, and VRcompare itself flags the LCD panel type as an estimate, so treat that as unconfirmed. Third-party refresh-rate figures for the P2 disagree with each other and we could not settle it against a DPVR source. We also found no published end-of-support or firmware-lifetime commitment for the P2, which matters more than usual on a device already running two-generation-old silicon.

DPVR P2 — frequently asked questions

Does the DPVR P2 track you when you walk around the room?
No. The P2 is a 3DoF headset with no positional tracking, so it registers only which way your head is turned. If you step forward, crouch or lean in to read something, the virtual scene does not move with you. That rules out any training scenario built on walking a route or approaching a machine, and it is a hardware limitation, not a setting.
The DPVR P2 only has 58, 64 and 70 mm IPD settings — is that a problem for a training group?
It can be. The P2 has three fixed hardware stops rather than a continuous slider, so a trainee whose interpupillary distance falls between them, or outside the 58–70 mm range, gets the nearest setting instead of a correct one. In practice that means slightly softer images and, for some people, eye strain over a long session. Plan on short sessions and check that people can read the on-screen text before you commit to a large order.
Why does the DPVR P2 cost 449 USD now when it launched at 398?
DPVR's own store lists the P2 at 449 USD as of August 2026, above the 398 USD launch price recorded for the controller bundle in 2023. Nothing about the hardware has changed. Budget for the current figure plus reseller margin in Europe, and remember the AAA batteries the BC301 controller needs are a recurring cost across a fleet.
