DPVR P1 Max — specification and verdict
DPVR files the P1 Max under its own "Standalone 3DOF" enterprise line, and that classification is the whole story for training: the headset follows where a trainee looks, not where they move. The Snapdragon XR2 with 6 GB of RAM is a real generational jump over the XR1 in the rest of the P1 range, and DPVR describes it as decoding up to 8K video — which is what this device is for, high-resolution 360 film in an arcade or an exhibition stand. The two features it is actually sold on are physical: an active cooling system with intake and exhaust vents top and bottom, aimed at headsets running all day in a public venue, and a top-mounted DC port offered with a plain cable or a steel-sleeved one for fixed installations. Everything a training buyer would ask next — panel type, refresh rate, field of view, weight, IPD range, what controller comes in the box — DPVR does not publish.
The first thing to settle is whether you can actually buy one. DPVR's own product title ends in "(Pre-sale)" while the same page's metadata reports the item in stock behind a working cart, so treat a purchase as a pre-order and get a ship date in writing before committing budget. Three versions sit behind one price band of 549 to 749 USD, and they differ only in how the headset is powered: the standard unit, a direct-DC version, and a direct-DC version with a steel conduit for fixed public installations. That is a venue decision, not a performance one — all three carry the same XR2, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The reserved Type-C module slot on the mainboard is DPVR's stated route to optional eye tracking, so the base device does not have it. There is no P1 Max entry in DPVR's manual downloads, no published weight and no stated controller, so plan a hands-on evaluation rather than a spec-sheet decision, and expect European supply through XR distributors rather than DPVR directly.
Do not buy the P1 Max for our courses. The XR2 has the performance, but the headset is 3DoF by DPVR's own product classification, and no amount of silicon substitutes for positional tracking — this is the same wall the rest of the P1 range hits. Where it makes sense is the job it was designed for: a VR arcade or exhibition stand playing high-resolution 360 film all day, where the active cooling and the bolt-down power cable are worth more than a spec sheet. If that is the brief, wait until the pre-sale label comes off and ask DPVR for the weight and the controller specification in writing first. If the brief is interactive training, buy a 6DoF standalone instead.

Who this device is for
VR arcades, exhibition stands and location-based entertainment venues running the same 360° film through a queue of visitors from opening to closing, where a headset bolted to a fixed power cable and cooled well enough to survive eight hours matters more than what it can simulate. Also plausible for a cinema-style seated installation. It is not for anyone who needs a trainee to walk a route, approach a machine or use their hands.
What is missing, and what the manufacturer does not publish
DPVR publishes seven rows for this headset and nothing else: display, processor, battery, memory, cooling, power input, expansion and connectivity. There is no panel type, no refresh rate, no field of view, no weight, no IPD range, no optics type and no controller specification anywhere on the page, and no P1 Max entry in DPVR's manual downloads, so all of those stay empty here rather than being borrowed from the P1 Pro. The display row reads "3664 x 1920 (Binocular)" — a figure for both eyes at once — so we record no per-eye resolution instead of halving it. The 3DoF classification comes from DPVR's own enterprise product navigation, which files the P1 Max under "Standalone 3DOF", rather than from the product page itself. Two things on the page contradict each other: the title says "(Pre-sale)" while the page metadata reports the product in stock. - No. The chip is not the obstacle; the tracking is. DPVR lists the P1 Max under "Standalone 3DOF" in its own enterprise product navigation, which means the headset registers head rotation and not position. Our courses require a trainee to move through a scene and use their hands, and no firmware update adds positional tracking to hardware that has no sensors for it. A Snapdragon XR2 headset with 6DoF tracking would run them; this one will not.
- What is the difference between the three DPVR P1 Max versions?
- Only the power supply. DPVR sells the P1 Max, the P1 Max Direct Power and the P1 Max Direct Power with Iron tube across a 549 to 749 USD band, and the difference is a standard unit, a top-mounted DC cable, or that DC cable inside a steel conduit for public installations where the cable gets pulled on. Memory, storage and processor are the same 6 GB, 128 GB and Snapdragon XR2 in all three, so this is a decision about the venue, not about performance.
- Can I buy a DPVR P1 Max today?
- That is genuinely unclear from DPVR's own page. The product title ends in "(Pre-sale)", which normally means orders are taken before shipping starts, while the page's own metadata reports the item as in stock and the cart accepts it at 649 USD. We record the headset as shipping, because it is purchasable at a listed price and DPVR states no release window anywhere — but the pre-sale label is the maker's own word and we have not been able to reconcile the two. If you are budgeting for a venue opening, get a delivery date from DPVR sales in writing first.
