Meta Quest 3S vs Meta Quest 2

Identical panel resolution, and one difference that decides it.

Companies replacing an ageing fleet ask this constantly, and the specification is misleading at first glance: Meta lists both headsets at 1,832 x 1,920 pixels per eye, and Quest 2 actually supports a wider range of refresh rates, from 60 all the way to 120 Hz. If resolution were the whole story, there would be no reason to upgrade.

The difference that matters is passthrough. Quest 3S has full-colour passthrough; Quest 2's is monochrome, which rules out any exercise where the trainee is meant to see the real room, hand over a real object, or have digital guidance drawn over real equipment. Everything else follows from status rather than silicon: Quest 2 is no longer sold by Meta, has no current facial interface or business tier, and offers no vendor support path for a new deployment, while Quest 3S is on sale in Poland with an accessory line and the current platform behind it.

Which one for training?

Quest 3S, without hesitation, for anything bought new. If you already own Quest 2 headsets, they remain usable for fully virtual scenarios — a fire simulation or a hazard-spotting module does not care about passthrough — so run them until the replacement cycle catches up rather than retiring working hardware early.
