What UK law expects

Training that is necessary, adequate and repeated

In Great Britain the employer has a general duty to give people the training they need to work safely. The law does not prescribe one format, but it expects training to fit the risks people actually face.

  • Information, instruction, training and supervision

    Every employer must provide “such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary” to ensure the health and safety of employees. Under section 9, employees cannot be charged for anything the law requires.

  • Adequate training when risks change

    Employees must receive “adequate health and safety training” on recruitment and when exposed to new or increased risks, such as a transfer, new or changed work equipment, new technology or a new system of work. Training must be “repeated periodically where appropriate” and “take place during working hours”.

  • Methods that work, checked afterwards

    HSE guidance lists “computer-based or interactive learning” among training methods, alongside on-the-job and classroom training. It recommends checking that training has worked and keeping records to help plan refreshers.

  • Working at height

    Falls from height: the top cause of fatal injuries (HSE)

    Trainees check anchor points, put on and attach fall protection and make decisions at the edge before any real exposure. Every attempt is recorded, so you can see who is ready and who needs another go.

  • Fire safety and evacuation

    Necessary instruction and training, HSWA s.2(2)(c)

    People choose the right extinguisher, tackle a small fire and find a safe way out when the usual route is blocked. It is VR fire safety training they can repeat until the response becomes second nature.

  • Manual handling and safe lifting

    Adequate training for the risks of the job, MHSWR reg. 13

    Trainees assess a load, plan the lift and practise safe posture in a realistic warehouse setting. It suits inductions and refreshers when tasks or equipment change.

Frequently asked questions

Does VR training count towards our legal training duty?
It can form part of it. UK law requires the training that is necessary and adequate for the risks, and HSE guidance lists computer-based or interactive learning among accepted methods. VR on its own does not discharge the duty: combine it with job-specific instruction, supervision and a check that the training has worked.
Does VR replace IOSH or NEBOSH courses, or hands-on practical training?
No. IOSH and NEBOSH are private qualifications, not legal requirements, and VR training does not award them. It also does not replace practical training with real equipment. What it adds is safe, repeatable practice that supports practical understanding before and after those courses.
How do we keep records and show that training happened?
Every session is stored in the panel with score, duration and lesson-by-lesson history. You can download PDF reports, export to CSV or Excel, and issue digitally signed certificates from your own template with a QR code anyone can verify without an account.
What hardware do we need?
Meta Quest or Pico headsets, paired to your organisation with a code. Courses run without internet for up to 30 days and results sync when the headset reconnects, so training can happen on the shop floor, on site or in a warehouse.
How do we get started?
